Hudson River Valley, New York: Gilded Age Estates and Historic Villages

The Hudson Valley begins just north of Manhattan, stretching upward along the Hudson and Mohawk Rivers all the way to northern Westchester County. The area is known for massive Gilded Age estates once belonging to powerful names such as the Rockefellers and Roosevelts. Hyde Park, just north of Poughkeepsie, was the latter family’s home base; today it’s where you’ll find the Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential Library. Another village of historical interest is Sleepy Hollow, the setting for Washington Irving’s classic story about Ichabod Crane and the Headless Horseman. Irving is buried in the cemetery here, along with several famous industrialists including Andrew Carnegie and Walter P. Chrysler.

Situated just outside New Paltz, Minnewaska State Park Preserve is one of the region's most peaceful natural settings; come for the waterfalls, winding carriage roads, and stunning fall foliage. The valley also includes the state’s capital city of Albany, where visitors can learn more about the area and beyond at the New York State Museum.

Staff was amazing. I had substantial abdominal surgery several weeks before and needed to sleep upright. Employee Chris brought an armchair up to our room! We will stay again!

Do not stay at Hotel Nyack! DO NOT STAY AT THIS HOTEL! We were here for two nights for a wedding - while our room had working AC, more than half of the other wedding guests did not have working AC in their rooms in the middle of a heat wave. These rooms were NOT cheap, and this is unacceptable. There was also no hand soap in any of the rooms, and body wash/shampoo/conditioner bottles were all close to empty. We were told by the front desk that they had “run out” of soaps and were offered zero remedy for the situation, and instead given a shoulder shury and told “things happen.” Within 2 minutes of arriving and checking in, we went to the room to unpack and received a knock on the door from maintenance asking if they could come in and paint one of the bed frames in our 2 Queen room, which would requiring moving the mattress off the frame until the paint dried. Incredibly unprofessional. Nothing about this place was worth of a 4-star rating or the price that came with it. The aesthetics are cool I guess, but the hotel was not functional and none of the staff seemed to have a clue. This hotel also claims to be “dog-friendly,” but one of the members of the wedding party received several complaints because her dog was barking - news flash, dogs bark. You can’t claim to be dog-friendly, then give your well-paying guests a hard time for their dog being a dog.

Retirement party My husband and I attended a retirement dinner last night. I have allergies and the management was told beforehand. I was told that a dinner would be provided for me. I received two slabs of over cooked chicken cutlets and told to eat the provided side dishes. We ordered two glasses of Cabernet Sauvignon and were told that they did not have any??? What?? We settled for the Pinot noir. We received a very small pour of a very inferior wine. Imagine my surprise when I received a $35.25 tab. This hotel is " located near Tarrytown", (as advertised), but it is certainly NOT in Westchester. We have paid less for wine at Sardi's in Time Square. We did stay the night. They refused to provide a group rate for a party of over one hundred. We used Groupon to get a reasonable rate. The acoustics were ridiculously loud with over high ceilings, exposed pipes. The bathroom barn doors didn't work properly, came off the tracks, had no privacy locks, no fan, and made an incredibly loud noise when closing. The shower was difficult to navigate, had no water pressure. There was no soap at the sink area, only body lotion. The only soap was in the shower. Over all, an experience I would not like to repeat.

Flooded room, hotel indifferent to the issue TLDR: Stayed here, wake up when groggy walking with socks on into a four foot puddle, and spent the next 2 hours of your vacation morning dealing with a flood and repacking and inspecting your stuff. All without a staffer ever coming to check out what I was saying or treat it with anything other than blase. Full: Had water come in from outside the building which ruined my wifes only pair of packed shoes. Hotel comped us the 'Destination fee' which is a tacked on fee to the price they advertise you pay for the room. They didn't send anyone to our room except a guy who passed me more towels and did an about face. Once the water seemingly shorted the fridge and we contacted the front desk for a third time they finally allowed for a room switch. After fully repacking my stuff, which had been unpacked, I carted it all downstairs as instructed only to cart it right back up to a few doors away. It just didn't feel like anyone at the hotel cared about my problem.
