Hudson River Valley, New York: Gilded Age Estates and Historic Villages

The Hudson Valley begins just north of Manhattan, stretching upward along the Hudson and Mohawk Rivers all the way to northern Westchester County. The area is known for massive Gilded Age estates once belonging to powerful names such as the Rockefellers and Roosevelts. Hyde Park, just north of Poughkeepsie, was the latter family’s home base; today it’s where you’ll find the Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential Library. Another village of historical interest is Sleepy Hollow, the setting for Washington Irving’s classic story about Ichabod Crane and the Headless Horseman. Irving is buried in the cemetery here, along with several famous industrialists including Andrew Carnegie and Walter P. Chrysler.

Situated just outside New Paltz, Minnewaska State Park Preserve is one of the region's most peaceful natural settings; come for the waterfalls, winding carriage roads, and stunning fall foliage. The valley also includes the state’s capital city of Albany, where visitors can learn more about the area and beyond at the New York State Museum.

Staff was amazing. I had substantial abdominal surgery several weeks before and needed to sleep upright. Employee Chris brought an armchair up to our room! We will stay again!

Day of the Dead Decor It’s like the theme of the decor is Day of the Dead. Very conveniently located to the highway and somewhat convenient to downtown Nyack, but it is unattractive. Our guest in room 343 was awakened in the middle of the night by loud arguing in the hallway.

Keep driving…go elsewhere At first blush the hotel looks cool and trendy, however the devil is in the details. There appear to be beliefs that the building has been repurposed from a factory into a hotel. This is false as the building, structure and foundations are new. On first entry into our room it became apparent that this was a VERY noisy hotel! The through the wall AC unit sounded like a freight train and was set to blow cold air directly onto the bed. This is a major fault with many Hyatts, they need to hire an engineer that can specify better, quieter and more user friendly equipment, it is available but Hyatt is too cheap to install it. So the AC gets shut off and we get to roast in the room. As bad if not worse was the noise from the major highway right out front. We asked the staff at the desk to put us on the back side away from the Highway but they refused, even with our reservation explicitly stating we wanted a quiet room. Continuing on noise, the poorly constructed building transmits noise through the floors, walls and bathrooms. Other issues included: lighting that flickers on and off, USB connections at the nightstands that do not work, the smoke detector strobe light that flashes every 15 seconds…all night!, cheap windows that are not Highway sound deadening, poorly fit window shade that hardly blocks out light, a poorly designed bathroom barn door that completely blocks clothes storage an the coffee/refrigerator station, poorly designed clothes hanger that will not accept a simple hanging clothes bag, sticky floors with very dirty grout, no trash can in the bathroom, virtually no light at the bathroom mirror, only two tiny pillows but the bed was comfortable.

Beautiful Hotel The hotel was beautiful. Rooms were spacious and well-decorated. We did not have the time for amenities but the pool areas looked great.
