Hudson River Valley, New York: Gilded Age Estates and Historic Villages

The Hudson Valley begins just north of Manhattan, stretching upward along the Hudson and Mohawk Rivers all the way to northern Westchester County. The area is known for massive Gilded Age estates once belonging to powerful names such as the Rockefellers and Roosevelts. Hyde Park, just north of Poughkeepsie, was the latter family’s home base; today it’s where you’ll find the Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential Library. Another village of historical interest is Sleepy Hollow, the setting for Washington Irving’s classic story about Ichabod Crane and the Headless Horseman. Irving is buried in the cemetery here, along with several famous industrialists including Andrew Carnegie and Walter P. Chrysler.

Situated just outside New Paltz, Minnewaska State Park Preserve is one of the region's most peaceful natural settings; come for the waterfalls, winding carriage roads, and stunning fall foliage. The valley also includes the state’s capital city of Albany, where visitors can learn more about the area and beyond at the New York State Museum.

Staff was amazing. I had substantial abdominal surgery several weeks before and needed to sleep upright. Employee Chris brought an armchair up to our room! We will stay again!

Style Without Substance There’s an old myth about the gods disguising themselves as travelers, testing humanity’s commitment to hospitality. Treat the guest well and you are rewarded. Treat them poorly and the consequences follow. I couldn’t help but think of that story as I checked into Hotel Nyack, a place that prides itself on style and vibe but seems to forget the sacred basics of hospitality. This trip was meant to be an escape from the real world. I specifically booked one of Hotel Nyack’s balcony rooms, perched high above Nyack, NY, even if the view is ultimately just the highway. I’ve stayed here several times before, so I’m not a stranger to the hotel’s issues. I’ve dealt with bad plumbing, beeping fire alarms, and noisy parties in the past. The allure has always been the funky aesthetic paired with a price tag that reflects staying just outside the city. After driving two hours in the aftermath of a snowstorm, I was greeted by a young and clearly inexperienced receptionist named Renel. In a stoic, matter of fact tone, he informed me that the balcony room I booked had no heat and that I would be downgraded to a smaller room. His version of “compensation” was charging me a cheaper rate. After a brief debate where I explained that paying less for a downgrade is not compensation, I realized the level of sheer stupidity I was about to contend with. Renel then informed me that on a Saturday night, during an event, there was no supervisor on duty and that I would have to wait four days until Wednesday to speak to one, since she had gone home for the night. He suggested I email her, though she may not respond. I explained that after driving two hours, the labor of contacting his supervisor should not fall on me and asked if he could draft the email and CC me. He refused, stating he would email her after the issue was resolved, despite the fact that I was seeking her assistance to resolve it. At that point, I seriously questioned his training and the level of intelligence I was working with. When I inquired about an upgrade instead of a downgrade, I was told there were no rooms available. I quickly checked online and saw that was not true. When confronted, I was then told I could upgrade for an additional forty dollars. The money was never the issue, the principle was. Why would I pay extra to resolve their heating issue, and why wouldn’t the hotel take responsibility for their own failure? After about thirty minutes, a man in a suit who had been seated nearby asked if everything was okay and introduced himself as Taylor, the manager of the food department. He went into the back, where I presume a supervisor was hiding, and returned with an actual solution. He comped the room, offered a free beverage from the bar, and extended checkout. He completely defused the situation. Still, I was left wondering why this was a situation to begin with. The solution was obvious from the start, and it’s hard to believe the hotel went through all of this to save forty dollars. Overall, if you have the money and the extra time, save yourself the headache and drive an additional thirty minutes into the city. If you’re on a budget and willing to tolerate inconvenience in exchange for aesthetics, then Hotel Nyack may still be your choice. Just know what you’re signing up for before you arrive.

Trendy look, disappointing experience in amenities Hotel Nyack definitely looks the part. The lobby is very trendy, and the rooms follow the same industrial-chic aesthetic. Unfortunately, that’s where the positives end. I’m not sure if the building is actually old or just designed to look that way, but the rooms functioned as if they were ancient. The HVAC system was awful and impossible to regulate—it was either freezing cold or uncomfortably hot. We were there for a wedding, and so many guests complained about the same issue, so it clearly wasn’t an isolated problem. The rooms are also extremely dark, even with all the lamps turned on. On top of that, there is only one outlet on one side of the bed and virtually nowhere else to plug in phones or devices, which is incredibly inconvenient. The shower barely worked and was another letdown- the water just spit out. Breakfast service was equally disappointing. It was painfully slow, and we had to remind staff multiple times that we still hadn’t even received coffee. Meanwhile, the manager was standing around and seemingly disengaged while service lagged, and just talking. The busser served us more than the wait staff. On the plus side, the front desk staff were very nice. If we weren’t staying here for a wedding, we absolutely would not have chosen this hotel. Given the brand affiliation, it’s shocking that this is a Hyatt property. Style alone doesn’t make up for poor functionality and service. Very disappointed.

Not My Cup Of Tea “The staff at the Nyack Hotel were lovely and very welcoming. Unfortunately, the hotel itself felt cold and uninviting—more like staying in a storage unit than a cozy place to relax. I couldn’t get past waking up with that feeling.” Plenty of parking but probably wouldn’t return back.
