Manhattan's Financial District: Wall Street, Skyscrapers, and the 9/11 Memorial

Once the sole province of day traders and bankers working frenetic jobs at the New York Stock Exchange and on Wall Street, the Financial District has attracted its fair share of full-time residents in recent years. Today, more than 56,000 people live in the neighborhood, which borders The Battery on the southern tip of Manhattan.

The population boom has helped expose the neighborhood’s occasionally overlooked cultural attractions. At the eastern edge of Fulton Street, the revitalized South Street Seaport historic district is home to some of the oldest architecture in downtown Manhattan as well as a fleet of renovated sailing ships and an up-close view of the Brooklyn Bridge. The district is also home to the towering One World Trade Center, which is now the tallest building in the Western Hemisphere. Right next door, a memorial to the nearly 3,000 people who lost their lives in the September 11th attacks is now open for visits, along with a museum.

Humiliating, Discriminating, Racial Profiling, Dishonest I stayed at M Social New York Downtown with my girlfriend, and I am still angry about how we were treated. What happened was unacceptable and should concern anyone considering this hotel. On two separate nights, we were stopped at the entrance and asked to show our key cards just to enter the hotel we were paying to stay in. The first night, I tried to handle it calmly and respectfully and showed my key card, even though it already felt wrong and uncomfortable. The second night, it became clear this was not about “security.” We walked in at the same time as another guest — a white male — who was not stopped, questioned, or asked for anything at all. He was allowed to walk straight in while we were immediately singled out again. I asked the staff member why we were being stopped yet again, and the explanation given was that a homeless person had entered the hotel the day before. That excuse made the situation worse, not better. If checking key cards is policy, then everyone should be checked, not selectively targeted guests. My girlfriend was clearly a guest, dressed comfortably in pajamas and a hoodie, and I was dressed appropriately as well. What guests wear does not justify profiling or harassment. Being forced to repeatedly prove we belonged there was humiliating and unnecessary. This behavior felt like blatant discrimination, and the fact that it happened two nights in a row confirms it was not accidental. A hotel should make guests feel welcome and safe — not watched, judged, or targeted. Also despite not mentioning anything about any security deposit they charged me $450 which i have no idea if they are gonna return that also reading all those other reviews from other hotel guests in tripadvisor. I will never stay at this hotel again and will actively discourage others from doing so. M Social New York Downtown seriously needs to address staff bias, training, and accountability. Until then, I cannot recommend this place to anyone who expects basic respect and equal treatment.

selective security that felt like profiling which felt humiliating and targeted My stay at M Social New York Downtown was humiliating, infuriating, and completely unacceptable. This hotel should be ashamed of how it treats paying guests. For two nights in a row, my boyfriend and I were stopped at the entrance and demanded to show our key cards just to walk into the hotel we were staying in. The first night, we were shocked and angry but chose to walk away rather than cause a scene. My boyfriend politely complied even though we were already being treated like we didn’t belong. The second night, the behavior crossed the line into something far more disturbing. We walked in alongside another guest — a white male — who was not questioned, stopped, or asked for anything whatsoever. He was allowed to walk straight through while we were immediately singled out again. When I confronted the staff member and asked why we were being targeted, the excuse given was that a homeless person had entered the hotel the day before. That response was insulting and offensive. I was clearly a hotel guest, wearing Victoria’s Secret Pink pajamas, a hoodie, and Yeezy slippers, and my boyfriend was dressed appropriately. Clothing is not justification for harassment, and neither is skin color. This was blatant profiling, and it happened twice, proving it was not a coincidence or a “security measure.” If this were truly policy, everyone would be asked — not just certain guests while others are waved in without question. Being treated like this at a hotel you’re paying to stay in is degrading. We were made to feel watched, judged, and unwelcome — as if we were suspects rather than guests. This hotel markets itself as modern and upscale, yet its staff behavior reflects something far uglier: bias, discrimination, and a complete lack of training or accountability. I will never return to this hotel and will be advising others to avoid it as well. If you value dignity, respect, and being treated equally — especially if you are a person of color — do not stay here. There are countless hotels in NYC that do not tolerate this kind of behavior. M Social New York Downtown failed miserably.
