Salt Lake City: Mormon Heritage, Skiing, and the Great Salt Lake

Surrounded by mountains on every side, Utah’s capital city sprawls across a broad valley that draws visitors looking to play in the great outdoors. Skiing in the nearby Wasatch Range is one of the most popular pastimes; there are eight ski resorts in a 50-mile range of the city. The area receives nearly 500 inches of snow annually, and several resorts offer access to slopes suitable for skiers of all skill levels. Summer visitors can still go to the ski areas for hiking and trail rides. There are also warm-weather activities just outside the city limits in the 2.1 million acres of the Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forest and near the Great Salt Lake—the largest saltwater lake in the Western Hemisphere and a remnant of a prehistoric inland lake.

Those interested in the origins of the city or the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints can check out the Church History Museum, home to a large collection of Mormon art and artifacts. If you’re looking to research your own genealogy, visit the Family History Library—which is free to the public—and search through a large database with the help of professional staffers and trained volunteers. Both the museum and the library are adjacent to Temple Square, one of Salt Lake City’s most popular attractions, where tranquil gardens surround the iconic Salt Lake Temple.

SECURITY PERSON SAID THAT THIS IS A HOSPITAL NOW I work at red lion in Jerome Idaho. I reserved a room here on September 22, 2020. I reserved the room for December 18th-22nd. and since I work for this corporation and since Hotel RL is higher than us I thought my experience there would be nice. me and friend got there on dec.18th and the doors were locked. a security guy stopped us and asked what we are doing outside the hotel I told him that I have a reservation. HE THEN TOLD US THAT THE HOTEL HAS BEEN CLOSED FOR 4 WEEKS AND ITS A HOSPITAL NOW. I went over to the gas station nearby and asked if they are really closed and the cashier lady at the gas station said that they have been closed for a while I BOOKED THE HOTEL 3 MONTHS PRIOR MY ARRIVAL DATE. I even called front desk to make sure that I have a reservation and he confirmed that I do have a reservation. I DIDNT GET ANY EMAIL OR EVEN A CALL THAT YOU GUYS ARE CLOSING THIS IS UNACCPETABLE!! WE ENEDED UP STAYING AT DOUBLE TREE HOTEL ACROSS THE STREET AND PAID A LOT MORE. I booked the room 3 months prior so we can save money and less hassle for us but y'all FAILED to inform the guest about the closing IM VERY DISAPPOINTED!!

They could do a lot better This is a large hotel that seems to be operating at less than half capacity, perhaps due to COVID. None of the restaurants are operating, but there is food nearby. In the room, the desk area was equipped with enough outlets to charge my devices. Having a vanity outside the bathroom is welcome for two people getting ready at the same time. I was. happy to have a luggage cart to bring my things up to the room. We were in room 310, which overlooks the heating and air conditioning units. The room shook from the vibrations of the equipment so much so that I thought I was moving! There was a hole in the ceiling above the vanity that I worried about. I didn't like paying for parking in what appeared to be an unsecured lot. I wonder why hotels don't use their best rooms, i.e., put their best foot forward when low occupancy allows for it. Perhaps we were given a "lesser" room because we had a dog? If you're also traveling with a dog, there is some grass right in front COVID, the only food or drinks available was free coffee in the lobby in the morning. The area is okay, probably not the best part of downtown, but it's not the worse. We felt safe walking to a restaurant.

It was okay.... If you just need a cheap place to lay your head for the night, this place will do. Don’t expect anything great though. It feels cheap and a little sketchy. No one greeting you and the front door isn’t automatic so unloading luggage was a pain. No luggage cart to be found. Smells like cheap cologne and the shower looked pretty gross. The bed was comfy though and the tv was large. Even the windows were dirty and I could hardly see outside. You get what you pay for though.
