The room was small, but that was expected based on the price. The location was a nice surprise because it was close to all the tourist destinations. The service was also a bonus because they let us leave our luggage before we checked in and after we checked out. Overall, this was a really great deal because of the quality service and location.

Hotel at a Glance: Hotel Stratford

Passing cable cars, famously inclined streets, and numerous shops and theaters set the stage for a classic San Francisco scene just outside the Hotel Stratford. Located near the Curran Theatre and big-name stores such as Saks Fifth Avenue, this welcoming hotel puts guests in the middle of the city’s bustling action.

  • Fuel up for the day with a complimentary breakfast that includes fresh fruit, muffins, cereals, juices, gourmet coffee, and tea.
  • Walk to hot attractions like Chinatown and the Nob Hill neighborhood, which are less than a mile away.
  • Take a ride on the cable car that passes right by the hotel to reach Fisherman’s Wharf. From there, you’ll be able to walk to Pier 39 and get views of Alcatraz and the Golden Gate Bridge.
  • Skip car-rental headaches by making a reservation to board the hotel’s airport shuttle (for an additional fee).

San Francisco’s South of Market Neighborhood: Museums, Gardens, and Tech Headquarters

Just north of the popular Mission District, South of Market (or SoMa, as it’s sometimes called) is a vast neighborhood that contains many of the city’s best museums, including the Asian Art Museum and the Museum of Modern Art. Yerba Buena Gardens displays a number of outdoor art pieces and a Martin Luther King Jr. memorial, which sits behind a 50-foot-high waterfall. The public gardens, a butterfly garden among them, cover two city blocks.

Quite a few Silicon Valley companies have had headquarters in South of Market, including Twitter, Yelp, and Wired. The Yerba Buena Center for the Arts is one of Apple Inc.’s favorite venues for unveiling new products—Steve Jobs introduced the iPod and the iPad to the world from its stage.

Jump on the Powell Street cable car and head up into the North Beach area to get a feel for San Francisco’s eclecticism. Fishers from Genoa immigrated to North Beach more than a century ago, and there’s still a strong Italian presence in the area. In the 1950s and 1960s, the neighborhood became a center for beatnik subculture. Allen Ginsberg and Jack Kerouac often hung out at the now-famous City Lights bookstore, an independent shop that remains a literary landmark and a center for San Francisco’s progressive politics.

It’s worth the price if you’re looking for something in the middle of all the action. It’s exactly as the pictures look. Small, clean and friendly. I would deft. Come back.

Very basic accommodation The hotel is in a good location, walking distance to shops, bars and restaurants. We received a warm welcome from the staff and found them to be friendly throughout our short stay. We had a twin room, it was very small with no room to lay our luggage cases. The TV in our room did not work on arrival but after reporting this the very friendly maintenance man helped to get this fixed later on in the evening. I was going to give this hotel a poor rating as the room and beds were so small but actually it was clean, the bedding was fine, the bathroom small but the shower worked well and was warm, the staff were good and it was the cheapest hotel we could find in a good area, so with this in mind I felt a poor rating was unfair and opted for average (somewhere in between the two would be how I would rate my experience). For a couple of nights the room size was liveable, however if i was staying any longer and perhaps using the room a little more, I would opt for a hotel with larger rooms.

Historic Hotel, Amazing Staff, Stay with Your Eyes Open Two business associates and I stayed at the hotel for a convention at Moscone Center in February 2020. The staff at the hotel worked hard to make our stay a great success. We are grateful for their greetings, warm check-in, and help with a minor problem during our stay — they exceeded our expectations in solving the problem. No air conditioning, but heat provided. It is an old, historic hotel so there are parts of the infrastructure of the hotel that might bother infrequent travelers or those who have never traveled to an urban area. The rooms are very small (meaning you have to step out of the way to close the door.) Rooms and hallways were very clean, beds comfortable, firm and soft pillows provided, internet worked flawlessly. Did not turn on the TV. Water was hot but pressure was average. The bath products are average, but the towels soft. The rooms are outdated and need the upgrade that was advertised for completion in fall 2019 but was not complete by our stay. The update will make the hotel nice IF they work hard on getting very old windows to close, doors to not stick, fix the underlying problems of peeling paint, and the like. The elevator is tiny and opens on the SIDE when you get off on your floor. So, make sure you PULL your suitcases into the elevator for ease of getting off. The biggest highlight of our stay was the breakfast. At the time of this writing, IF you make your reservations on the hotel’s website, breakfast is included at no additional cost. (We found their website price to be competitive with our research on Kayak.) The breakfast is served less than a block away at Bartlett Hall, a bar and restaurant connected to another hotel. It has to be the best included breakfast I’ve ever eaten. The hotel is a short walk from Moscone Center and just a few steps from the shopping district and the park at Union Square. I recommend staying here, but go in with your eyes open.

Great location and value This hotel is located right on Union Square and is a great value compared to other hotels. Their renovated rooms on the 8th floor are really nice. Just want to also mention the stellar customer service I received from Allison at the front desk. She happily switched me into different rooms per my request on multiple occasions- that’s kind of rare. Usually staff does not go above and beyond like that and still smile when you create extra work for them. Thank you Allison!
