Austin, Texas: Proudly Offbeat State Capital and Live-Music Capital of the World

Built in 1888, the pink-granite Texas Capitol building in Austin is the largest state capitol in the country and even taller than the US Capitol in Washington, DC—proof that everything is, indeed, bigger in Texas. Yet Austin stands apart from the rest of the state politically and culturally, a fact that locals seem to revel in. "Keep Austin Weird" is a popular motto here, appearing on bumper stickers and T-shirts. The weirdness manifests itself all over town, where you’ll find a death-metal-themed pizza place, a cathedral made of garbage, and the Museum of Natural & Artificial Ephemerata, which displays an 1893 World’s Fair stereograph and one of Marilyn Monroe’s cigarette butts.

Austin has been dubbed the Live Music Capital of the World thanks to the city's nearly 200 venues, where bands play everything from blues to punk rock. In fact, Travel + Leisure magazine named Austin one of America's Best Music Cities, calling it the "mother ship for indie rock and alternative-country types." Stubb's Bar-B-Q books some of the bigger acts that come to town, including Johnny Cash and Snoop Dogg. In addition to the live entertainment taking place on a nightly basis, two massively popular music festivals—South by Southwest and Austin City Limits—draw in huge crowds each year.

Perfect for heavy sleepers. Everyone else, be aware. My experience began on a somewhat challenging note when I arrived at the hotel. There was construction happening all around the hotel which detracted from the initial appeal. I checked in on a Saturday, and the hotel was bustling with activity, including many guests accompanied by VERY LARGE dogs. It's important to note that this hotel is pet-friendly and welcomes dogs of all sizes. Additionally, the lobby was undergoing renovations, which further impacted the overall atmosphere. The hallways going to the rooms are also very dark. You should know that that there are bars and clubs across the street that play music late into the night. For light sleepers, this could be a concern; however, the hotel does provide a sound machine and earplugs in each room. If you're a heavy sleeper who enjoys a loud, chaotic environment, this is the perfect spot for you.

Nice Hotel - Awful Pool Nice hotel near Rainey street. It has a nice vibe and a classy look. Rooms have good value and well appointed extras. Food at both Geraldine’s and the pool was all delicious and creative. I also enjoy a hotel with a coffee shop that isn’t Starbucks. Being right off of Rainy street meant you could just go out your front door and good music was at your feet. Front desk service was spot on and the property was clean. A couple of negatives to think through. We were on the top floor and still had some pretty bad noise until late into the night. If that bothers you ask for the backside of the hotel. You absolutely need ear plugs. Secondly, their pool is poorly run. We spend 10 hours at the pool across two days. While there are only six or so cabanas that’s all they spent time serving. Not once in two days did ANYONE ask if we needed something. Not one server made eye contact or smiled. The bar was open most of the morning, but after about 2p it was 20 to 30 people deep trying to get a drink. I wish hotel management just sat outside and watched how grumpy and unwelcoming their staff is and how inefficient it’s run. Don’t stay at this hotel if pool time is a must for you. It was for us.

Weekend stay during June Adding $100 PER night to a stay for parking and “hotel fees” its just a big no-no. $64 for valet parking, what kind of nonesense is this? Will def. not stay here again. This is not the type of hotel (not luxury enough, no perks as a high end hotel, not in an area or city, etc. etc. etc.) to be charging these amounts, it just isn’t. Just be aware of that. Other than that stay was OK, again nothing special.
