Houston, Texas: Space History and Museums in Nation’s Fourth-Largest City

As the nation’s fourth-largest city by population, Houston has established itself as one of the Gulf Coast’s most thriving cultural hubs. The city's museum district has 19 museums covering everything from history to art to science. For art lovers, the Menil Collection—which Frommer’s calls “one of the great private collections of the world”—is a must-see. Here, you’ll browse an array of 20th-century art from Jasper Johns, René Magritte, and Andy Warhol, as well as artifacts from Africa and the Pacific Islands.

You could also spend an entire day exploring Houston’s science institutions. When Apollo 13 astronaut Jim Lovell famously stated, “Houston, we have a problem,” he was talking to mission control at Space Center Houston. Here, visitors can tour the historic mission-control room and get a behind-the-scenes look at astronauts training for the International Space Station. Along Houston’s Hermann Park, The Health Museum exhibits a large-scale human body that you can enter to learn about how your organs operate.

Disappointed in Hyatt This is the first and only Hyatt where I have not felt recognized or valued—even as a Globalist. I hold elite status with multiple hotel brands, and I am genuinely shocked by how I have been treated here. At check-in, I was told, without asking, that there were no suites available for Globalist upgrades. It felt as though my options were already limited to the lowest-tier suites, and we were placed in a standard room. The hotel did not appear to be at capacity, which made the lack of effort even more disappointing. Our room was extremely warm (despite the thermostat reading 61) and never cooled down. None of the phones in the room have worked during the stay, and the only guest-accessible microwave has been broken. Each morning, our to-go breakfast orders have been missing items, though the breakfast staff has been kind. The café is very overpriced—I paid over $21 for just a few snacks. When my daughters asked housekeeping for extra bottled water, they were told some had already been left and were denied more. The most shocking part has been the front desk experience. When I asked for the manager’s contact info and said I would be reaching out to corporate, Kamoyah S. responded with a dismissive tone and attitude. When I politely asked her not to continue speaking to me, she did so anyway. Even more surprising, the young man working with her, Jaren M., laughed while I was explaining my concerns. The very next day, Jaren was wearing Kamoyah's name tag, which makes me believe they were not being forthcoming with their names. Yesterday, I left a message for the front desk manager, Xavier, and have not received a response. This comes after I asked the staff to leave a message for him to call me. I have not even checked out yet, and I am already extremely disappointed. Hyatt properties, especially those under the Regency brand, are usually warm, professional, and attentive. The Hyatt Regency Downtown always greets us by name and goes above and beyond. This location has been the complete opposite, and I now understand why its ratings are so low—even on the Hyatt app.
