Schaumburg, Illinois: Family-Friendly Chicago Suburb with Shopping and Nature Preserve

Schaumburg, located about 30 miles northwest of Chicago, is best known as the home of Woodfield Mall, the nation’s ninth-largest shopping center. Among roughly 300 stores and restaurants, Woodfield’s anchor attractions include an Apple Store, Macy’s, and Nordstrom. Just around the corner, The Streets of Woodfield offers a pedestrian-friendly experience with a movie theater, clothing stores, and the Legoland Discovery Center. Here, kids can tour an interactive Lego “factory” and build their own Lego creations.

Experience the outdoors at the Ned Brown Forest Preserve—popularly known as Busse Woods—a 3,700-acre expanse on the border of Schaumburg and Elk Grove Village. Bikers, joggers, and rollerbladers take advantage of an 8-mile paved loop as fishers post up around Busse Lake in pursuit of channel catfish, largemouth bass, and northern pike. The forest preserve is also a popular spot for canoeing and picnicking. Come evening, journey back to the Middle Ages at Medieval Times, a restaurant that puts on a nightly show—a jousting tournament with horseback-riding knights and falconry demonstrations.

A shadow of its former self Stayed here 2 nights mid December and the first warning sign were the entry doors out of order, then it was the dank, damp, musty smell upon entering made me want to turn and run. One elevator, out of order, the ice machine on my floor out of order, the carpeting was stained in various places. My room's heating system was noisy, there were no glasses in the bathroom, minimal towels, the water took about 8 minutes to get warm before I gave up and tried again later. There was no menu ordering guide for nearby restaurants and not even a pen or paper and one of the lampshades was torn. The windows looked as though they hadn't been cleaned in years. Basically Indian Lakes is NOT what it was and Covid has done nothing but made it worse. Pathetic and only a ghost of its former glory.

Horrible Hotel Experience First off, if I could give them zero stars I would. Before booking, I looked at this hotel's website. Their website said that they offered free continental breakfast. They did not offer any sort of breakfast or meal service at this hotel. The website said their bar would be open but it was only open on Friday night, not Saturday night. Their hot tub was also closed. They did not have any mini golf or regular golf open on the property. There were also no chairs or tables in the pool area. The pool table in the arcade also didn't have the white ball in order to play. The sink in our room was coming off from the wall. There were multiple drip buckets left throughout the property and visible leaks as well. There were cigarette butts inside the building. And the worst of them was a used tampon in one of the hallways. The property on the outside is in complete decay. Many of the buildings are boarded up and the landscaping very overgrown. Please save your money and book elsewhere!
