Hotel at a Glance: Indian Wells Resort Hotel

Founded in 1957 by Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz, Indian Wells Resort Hotel attracted a roster of A-list guests from the get-go. Designed as an exclusive getaway, the resort gave celebrities a chance to golf, play tennis, and lounge poolside in the desert sun. You can follow in their footsteps today at the retro-chic hotel, which channels the glamour of Palm Springs’s mid-century heyday.

  • Tee off on Indian Wells Country Club’s private golf course—where Presidents Bill Clinton, George H.W. Bush, and Gerald Ford once played—or on Indian Wells Golf Resort’s two championship golf courses, which are both ranked on Golf Week magazine’s “Best Courses You Can Play” in California list.
  • Perks: Your stay includes welcome drinks plus daily hot breakfast.
  • Where you’ll stay: Guest rooms’ private balconies offer views of the pool or the desert landscape. One-bedroom suites look out on the Santa Rosa Mountains and the country club.
  • Ol’ Blue Eyes was the inspiration for the onsite restaurant and lounge, Frank’s Place. Savor Italian dishes such as veal scaloppini and enjoy live music.
  • Sip tropical drinks and relax poolside at Palm Terrace, which overlooks the golf course’s 11th green.

Indian Wells, California: Desert City with Outdoor Recreation and Hollywood History

The temperate weather and tucked-away feel of Indian Wells—located 17 miles southeast of Palm Springs—attracted Hollywood royalty to the area in the 1950s and ’60s. President Dwight D. Eisenhower enjoyed the area so much that he made Indian Wells his winter home.

Though it experienced a lull at the turn of the century, the greater Palm Springs area has emerged once again as a vacation hot spot. The sun shines roughly 350 days a year here, so the abundant hiking trails and designer golf courses stay open all year. Luxury spas and boutique shops fill Palm Springs’s glitzy downtown area, which is surrounded by chic mid-century hotels and elaborate, Mediterranean-inspired villas.

Great views! Desert Oasis. Order the Breakfast Burrito. Trust me. I’ve tried all the options and that was the best for your buck. Mahalo

Although times are tough Indian Wells hasn’t changed much. Safety is top priority now. You can order drinks and food during restaurant hours and eat it poolside. Everyone respected the rules and kept a safe distance. Make sure you take your own pillow cases and towels to be safe. Sanitize everything. Head over to living desert zoo. Mahalo

There was no one “best” thing, since this is one classic, clean, quiet place with great Groupon related service. Our TV wasn’t working when we checked in. Less than five minutes later, problem fixed, and off to our complementary drinks. Beautiful grounds. Our New Year’s Eve stay was highlighted by a fireworks display down the street. What a location!

This is my second time staying here and for the price this place is great! Free breakfast and drinks, a clean room, staff very accommodating, and central to all my golf festivities. Will stay again in the future.
