Long Beach, Washington: Clams, Kites, and Cranberries on the Pacific Coast

About 115 miles northwest of Portland, 28 miles of uninterrupted shoreline stretches across the Long Beach Peninsula. Crowds flock to the area all year round—even in the winter months, when average temperatures are in the 40s. The main draw during that part of the year is clamming. On certain government-approved dates, you can take to the sands to dig for fresh razor clams, which locals enjoy battered and fried in butter.

Come spring, warmer weather brings out swarms of colorful kites. Kite flying is something of an obsession in Long Beach. The town is home to an annual kite festival as well as the World Kite Museum, the only museum in America dedicated to the art, history, and science of kite making. Another local obsession is cranberries—their bright-red bogs line the coast from Oregon to British Columbia. At the Pacific Coast Cranberry Museum in Long Beach, you can learn about the history of cranberry farming, arrange a bog tour, and enjoy a cup of tart cranberry tea. Other happenings of spring and early summer include the World’s Longest Garage Sale, which stretches from nearby Ilwaco to Oysterville, and the return of the historic tall ships Lady Washington and Hawaiian Chieftain.

Expensive/low quality room. This was our last stop on our coastal anniversary trip. We had been booking more local places instead of chain hotels. We were excited because we thought we had a beach front hotel, turns out our room was in the "beach house" which is behind the big inn buliding so no water view. Also we drove around 3 times because we couldn't find our room, we were unaware that there were rooms inside the beach house. You go through what just looks like someones back door and there are two hotel doors inside. Very odd. Then the room itself was like they were trying to make it fancy but skipping comfort and quality. The room felt damp and the only chair was a questionable looking chair in the corner that had stains on it. The bed was basically on the floor and like laying on a brick. My husband likes firm beds and even he was complaining about the bed being hard. The shower light was missing a cover over it. It just wasn't worth the amount of money. We stayed in much nicer places along the coast for less money that came with included breakfast. This hotel didn't even offer breakfast to it's guests.

Diminished quality but great location This was our 8th year in a row coming to the Adrift/Inn properties. This year we stayed in the Beach House and were disappointed with our experience. The room showed significant wear and tear (like chunks of wood missing from furniture, splinters, unpainted wall patches) and the noise from the upstairs suite was really loud. The room was also significantly dusty in corners and above light fixtures. They have also clearly downgraded the benefits of their loyalty program, which they did without any heads up. (I have received notice from other loyalty programs when benefits have changed.) We used to love the breakfast platter...which is now only 2 vouchers for espresso and a box of caramels. The benefit program benefits is one of the reasons we kept coming back and it was hard to see this get such a swift downgrade. The staff are really lovely and the location is truly unbeatable. Also, the pool is a nice addition! It's disappointing to see that the hospitality group's growth has come at the expense of quality and the previously generous benefits program. We've never considered going elsewhere but I would say that the amenities of the Inn are not worth the expense and if you're going, stay at The Adrift, definitely don't stay in the beachouse.

A bit of a let-down If you look back to 2018, you'll find a 5 star review from me. Unfortunately, our experience wasn't the same this year - which is so sad because we've been coming back to Inn at Discovery Coast for years. We consider it our special place for our anniversary. This year, it definitely was missing some magic. We loved the room service breakfasts that used to come with our stay. Then it was limited to 1 breakfast per stay. Then they were available only for purchase. Now, breakfast is available in the lobby and it's pastries or egg bites. The cozy baskets are gone. We loved the classic white, oversized spa robes. My husband is 6'1" and needs a large robe. The robes are now a light gray hoodie material and too small for him. The toilet paper is terrible quality, and the toiletries have changed. Even the towels and bedding were looking flimsy and threadbare, and one of our towels was torn. There is no longer an honor bar with cool snacks. The shining lights of our stay were the Pickled Fish staff. Our bartender made an awesome drink - the Love Flight - and our server, Brittany, was awesome. Of course the food was delicious - we've always loved Pickled Fish. We were surprised that there wasn't live music on Valentine's Day, though, and the hostess seemed annoyed when we requested a table in the window (we had reservations, and it was our Anniversary - which I specified in the reservation). Overall, it just didn't feel the same. The things that made it special seem to be going away, which makes us sad. It's a nice enough hotel, but there are many just like it now. We miss the old experience.
