Montgomery Bell State Park, TN: Year-Round Recreation Outside Nashville

Montgomery Bell State Park provides Nashvillians with a convenient outdoor playground just 45 minutes away from the city. The park is open year-round for mountain biking, hiking, and fishing, with boating allowed on two of its three lakes. The Montgomery Bell Golf Course opens in the spring—this tree-lined course hosts the Dogwood Classic each year .

Near the beginning of the 19th century, the land that is now Montgomery Bell State Park was the center of Middle Tennessee's iron industry. This land was developed by Montgomery Bell, who was nicknamed "Tennessee's First Iron Master" and who became one of the South's richest people before the Civil War. The ruins of Bell's iron furnace can still be found at the park.

The area attracted attention again in 1810, when Reverend Samuel McAdow founded the Cumberland Presbyterian Church in his log-cabin home at a location that's now within the park. Today, a replica of McAdow's log cabin stands where the church was founded, and a sandstone chapel commemorates the events nearby.
