Hotel at a Glance: Inn at Mystic

Three colonial-style buildings sprawl over the tree-studded property of Inn at Mystic, just a stone’s throw from the waters of Mystic Harbor and Fishers Island Sound. The setting lends itself to outdoor adventure, whether you want to hike and bird watch on the surrounding trails or cast out for bass and bluegill on the sound.

  • Fresh seafood: Chefs at the on-site Harbour House Restaurant make pan-seared fresh Atlantic salmon filet served with a roasted butternut and apple-wood smoked bacon hash. The restaurant has a wide choice of beers on tap.
  • Colonial-style guest rooms are decked out with canopied four-poster beds, free WiFi, and HDTVs. Some of the recently revamped rooms have their own private balconies, jetted tubs, and fireplaces as well.
  • On-site entertainment includes weekly trivia and live music at the restaurant and occasional wine tastings with samples poured from local wineries.
  • A free continental breakfast Monday–Friday is included, and guests receive a 15% off voucher for the Brunch on Saturday and Sunday.

Mystic, Connecticut: Old Shipping Town with Antique Shops and Fresh Oysters

Few towns embody the aesthetic of New England better than Mystic, an old shipping borough on Long Island Sound. The centuries-old sea captain’s houses along the shore have been well preserved; many now house antique shops and oyster bars that sell fresh-caught seafood reeled in from the harbor. You can actually tour an actual 19th-century whaling village called the “Mystic Seaport Maritime Museum” with the last wooden whaling ship in existence, The Charles W. Morgan.

When the leaves change in autumn, and again after the first snowfall, Mystic takes on a storybook quality that’s best appreciated from old Bastille Bridge over the Mystic River in the historic downtown area. Kayak around the adjoining estuary, a wildlife management area. Its saltwater and freshwater marshlands are home to a variety of fish and waterfowl.

Two Wonderful Nights at the Inn! I spent two nights at the Inn at Mystic on a quick vacation up to Rhode Island and Connecticut. Everything was excellent. The room was clean and the bed was comfortable. When I got to my room, the tv was not working. The staff immediately came to the room and straightened it out (someone had unhooked the cable, so it wasn't getting a signal - I probably should have checked that). All of the staff were friendly, professional, and efficient. The Inn sits on top of a small hill overlooking the mouth of the Pequotsepos River as it empties into Mystic Harbor. Very scenic views! They had an onsite restaurant (Rocks 21) with a small, but nice, continental breakfast each day and they had such good happy hour specials, I ate both of my dinner meals there, too. The wait staff there was also excellent! I was able to visit the Mystic Seaport and the Submarine Force Museum, which are nearby and I had a wonderful conclusion to my vacation.

The Inn takes away your stress from the very beginning! Traveling can be stressful. So many things to worry about. Will I like my room? Is it quiet? Is it clean? Is it worth the money? Staying at the Inn at Mystic eliminates all of that! We just finished our 7th stay here in the last 8 years and it just gets better and better. That starts with the people. They seem to be very careful about who they hire, because a great and friendly staff doesn't just happen. It starts with booking the rooms where I usually work with Brenda. She is always very helpful and accommodating. Arriving on July 4th, the first face we see is Brittany's - and as always, she's got a big smile. I didn't really expect her to remember us but she did - even to what room number we had the year before. Brittany isn't just friendly, she cares, and really wants to be sure your stay is happy and smooth. There's no way to review the Inn without reviewing Rocks 21 (the restaurant across the parking lot) at the same time. For us they go hand in hand. The staff at Rocks 21 is a big part of why we come back year after year. They are so much fun, so welcoming - but they also know when to give you space. Every year I walk in and hope, hope, hope that Dan is (or will soon be) at the bar. Chris and Jake managing and making sure everyone is happy with their visit there. Candi at the hostess stand - making sure you get just the right seat (there are so many options). They are all so entertaining. The food is outstanding, the prices are reasonable and they have sensational Happy Hour deals five days a week. They have 2 decks with amazing views and a patio (rather new) on another level. They just never settle for being great, they are always looking for the next great way to add to your experience. A bar on the main level (for a more quiet experience) and another one on the patio level for a little more energy. Back to the Inn itself . . . rooms with king beds PLUS a wood burning (Duraflame) fireplace PLUS a Jacuzzi hot tub PLUS a balcony with an amazing view of the harbor are available. Oh, and they have a great outdoor pool. Sun or shade options and water that feels just right (I actually brought a thermometer with me this time and it was 81 degrees. Cool - not cold - but just refreshing enough). One of these times we will try the kayaks they offer. We just get so involved in other activities we always forget. Now, just so you don't think I only see the great things and nothing of the less great, I'll be honest that there are a couple of things I think they could work on. The pool had very few lounge chairs this time. That has not been an issue before but I guess something happened to them, and for all I know there are a bunch on order. Small stuff. They had plenty of regular pool chairs, so it was a minor thing. Its a pretty big, sprawling inn, and its New England. Pretty brutal winters. There are always going to be a few small things that need a little work. I was glad to see that the few I noticed last summer were taken care of since then. And they seem to be even more attentive to landscaping / flowers etc. these days. Its really stunning when you drive in and around. We are always a little sad when we leave, knowing we won't be back for another year, but isn't that a great way to feel? You should miss it . . . . just like you are so eager when the time to come back returns! The Inn takes

If in Mystic this is a great stay option! Passing through Mystic on our way to Newport RI we booked into this Inn for an overnight stay. Our room was very clean and reasonably priced,,including a very good breakfast. It had a lovely view out over the local waterway. The restaurant and bar which is part of the Inn complex was great for an evening drink and meal.
