Steamers and schooners were built here before being shipped off to Chicago and Milwaukee. The town’s harbor walk wraps around the mouth of the river and leads to a red iron lighthouse built in 1903. Along the way, the walk passes the five buildings of the Michigan Maritime Museum, which includes a replica boathouse and an original U.S. Life-Saving Service crew quarters. Maritime culture still thrives here; in the summer, South Haven’s coast is the domain of Friends Good Will, an antique Great Lakes tall ship that still gives public rides.
Linking South Haven with Kalamazoo to the east, the Kal-Haven Trail runs more than 30 miles and is popular with hikers and bikers. Other visitors head to local championship golf courses and vineyards. South Haven sits at the tail end of what locals refer to as Michigan’s Art Coast, a string of galleries lining the Blue Star Highway between South Haven and Saugatuck.
