Galveston, Texas: Exotic Animals, Water Parks, and Victorian Mansions on the Gulf of Mexico

Galveston occupies a barrier island roughly a half-hour drive from Houston. Its gulf beaches are bathed in sunlight more than 200 days of the year. Though Galveston’s climate is almost tropical, penguins waddle into chilly waters at the city’s most famous attraction, Moody Gardens. Nearby, saki monkeys roam a rainforest habitat, stingrays glide through a 1.5-million-gallon aquarium, and snow falls on moviegoers’ noses in a 4-D theater. Another popular attraction is Schlitterbahn Water Park, where you can zoom down water slides and sidle up to a swim-up bar all year round.

Step back in time with a visit to downtown Galveston’s Strand District. Here, classic cars and horse-drawn carriages roll down streets lined with old-fashioned street lamps and elaborate Victorian mansions. These brick behemoths now house art galleries, antique stores, and shops selling homemade ice cream and handcrafted jewelry.

Worst customer service I’ve ever witnessed - wish I could give negative stars In March of 2021, my organization signed a contract for 25 rooms so we could take a group of kids to galv. When we got there, they didn’t have our rooms. Like, they actually said “we don’t know if we’ll have the rooms available at all”. A signed contract. And, they didn’t seem to care the impossible situation they put us in. I wish I could give negative stars.

Nice Place to stay We stayed at this hotel because they offered a park & ride for our Journey Cruise. For their cheapest room, the shuttle service & after tax we paid almost $183.00. If we would of parked at the Galveston Port of parking it would of been about $150.00 for the two weeks of parking. Now this hotel uses Moody Gardens for their shuttle service because somehow these two companies are linked together. Here is the down fall to this deal. Since Moody Gardens Hotel is the shuttle service their guest come first & are high priority. So the shuttle picked us up first then went to Moody Gardens to pick up their people. After sitting their for 20 minutes the driver came back & said they didn't have anybody to pick up at that time so we went to the port. He told us the pick up times where 9:00 am, 10:30 am & 12:30 pm when we return & where to find them. So when we returned we found the driver & got loaded to be returned. Now since Moody Gardens in priority they got dropped off first. The driver called in all their valet numbers so their vehicles were waiting for them up front when we arrived. Then he went into the hotel to get their keys & then unloaded their luggage. This whole process took us a half hour of messing around & we didn't get dropped off until almost 10:00 am. If I was to ever do this again I'd just stay at Moody Gardens or park at the port which is much faster.

1 night stay before cruise Marcus, desk clerk, was great. Rooms are fine & large. Breakfast selections are very limited. Good cruise shuttle to pier. If you book thru hotel, it's included. If not, it's $16 or $17 each person round trip. I'd stay there again before a cruise.

Perfect for Bike Around The Bay After 100 miles on my bike, I want somewhere close to the finish line, good value, hot shower and a clean bed, and the Inn at The Waterpark has all of that. Stayed there perhaps four times, and it does exactly what I need. Friendly staff, too.
