Chicago’s Magnificent Mile: Upscale Boutiques and Historic Architecture

On Chicago’s Magnificent Mile, landmark skyscrapers such as the John Hancock Center and the Wrigley Building tower over the city’s liveliest retail corridor. In total, this stretch of high-end real estate houses some 460 stores, ranging from exclusive designers such as Armani and Chanel to beloved brands including Apple, American Girl, and Gap. Double-decker buses and horse-drawn carriages circle the Chicago Water Tower, a limestone icon that survived the Great Chicago Fire, and droves of shoppers navigate eight levels of boutiques and cafés at the nearby Water Tower Place.

Lake Shore Drive runs two blocks east of Michigan Avenue. Travel + Leisure called this stretch “the greatest architecture road on earth” thanks to the superstar skyscrapers lined up along the lakefront. Looming above them all, of course, is the Willis Tower (formerly known as the Sears Tower)—the tallest building in North America. Runners, cyclists, and runaway lawn mowers travel the adjoining Lakefront Trail throughout the year. A mile and a half north, crowds gather at North Avenue Beach during the summer to people watch, play volleyball, and listen to live music at beachfront bars. You can get to the beach (and practically anywhere else in the city) using Chicago’s extensive public transportation system.

Horrible customer service Room is old & furniture is extremely uncomfortable. The air conditioner makes terrible noise sounds like washing machine off balance. We needed to check out day early & mgr refused said had to pay b/c we weren’t gold members. We are silver. D

Migrant Hotel This hotel is a camp for the migrants that come to Chicago. It’s terrible, dirty and they have a prostitution ring in their alley. They are destroying the neighborhood for profit. They have drug dealers that operate out of here and litter all over the sidewalks. Shame on them.

Mag Mile Was looking for an easy place to stay near an important meeting I was attending. Room didnt include a coffee maker, but I guess I appreciated not being tempted because of covid safety. Also received a wellness bag with a mask, alcohol wipes, a "button sleeve" for the remote... and there was a texting feature so you could text the front desk instead of having to touch the phone or go down in person... hours were unclear though so I did get ghosted the 2nd day lol... but it's nice that they're doing so much to make sure guests and staff are safe. Found trash under the bed, air conditioner was broke making it SUPER loud, but I didn't notify them. Felt comfortable and safe staying there. Great location if the world wasn't a dystopian nightmare, most of the bars/restaurants were closed from covid.
