Key West, Florida: Dazzling Sunsets, Six-Toed Cats, and Cuban Culture

Located just off Florida’s southernmost tip and north of Cuba, the island of Key West is undoubtedly the most famous of the Florida Keys. Frommer’s calls it “the land of the eternal vacation.” Most tourists come to Key West’s gulf-side beaches to snorkel, surf, or fish, but no trip to Key West is complete without a visit to the Ernest Hemingway Home & Museum, where the author lived, worked, and kept his six-toed cats. More than 50 descendants of those famous felines still prowl the grounds of the museum to this day.

At nighttime, locals and visitors alike converge on the Mallory Square Dock to watch the sun dip below the Gulf of Mexico, casting swaths of deep orange and pink against the horizon. The spectacle is so breathtaking that it inspires a sunset celebration each night. The dock comes to life with traveling psychics, one-man bands, and food vendors serving fresh-squeezed lemonade and plantain chips.

It use to be good but not anymore! Extremely dissapointed with Managment and Restaurant Staff I had a horrible experience with Adriana and another of the staff members in the restaurant. They were rude and did not apologize for it. I put in a report to Brittany at the front desk and the manager and they asure me they would let the manager at the restaurant know what happened and assure me they would call me and they didn't. I was taken back by the poorly service I got this time around. I wanted my husband to have a great fAther's day weekend and I was extremely disappointed this time. Not sure I will be visiting any time soon. Also the room they gave us #307 even thought it was beautiful one of the rooms the A/C was not cooling at all. It was extremely hot and pillows were not as comfortable.

Look elsewhere to stay! I booked an ocean view room for 6/13-6/20 to celebrate my 60th birthday. I brought my adult son with me to help celebrate. I had paid $2,611.60 in advance to reserve our room with 2 queen beds. My friend had recommended this place as a great stay to enjoy the keys and beach/water experience. So imagine my surprise when immediately upon checking in, I had to have a $1,600+ hold put on my debit card before they'd hand over the room keys!! I've stayed in many 4 and 5 star resorts all around the world, and never have had such a large hold requested. We never even charged a dime to the room the whole stay!! And if that wasn't enough, to add insult to injury, an additional $636.45 was charged at the end of our stay to cover overnight parking and misc resort fees and taxes, etc. CRAZY! The room was nice, the staff were mostly friendly, and house-keeping was great. I was annoyed there was no microwave, and the small fridge was barely cold. The toilet had a problem with flushing (many times we had to lift the lid on the tank and manually flush it). I loved the deep large bathtub! The walk-in shower was large and the water pressure was great. The water was hot. I swam in the adult pool a few times, and it was comfortably warm...not too hot. Plenty of towels and seating. Just wish the pool were a tad larger. We didn't eat at the on-site restaurant because it was grotesquely over-priced. Lots of restaurants in the area to eat though. Publix is close by. We did one water sport affiliated with the hotel. We went jet skiing on Thurs June 19th. Devin was our guide. It was both my son's and my first time doing this, and we had a blast. We were pleasantly surprised when Devin took video/pics of us, and offered to share after our excursion. Unfortunately, even after leaving a reminder note at the activities desk, and sending an email after we got home, Devin never made good on his promise. Sadly, we have zero photos of this amazing adventure to look back on. The final straw that shook me however, was realizing my bed was infested with bedbugs! I was/am still covered head to toes in bites. I called the front desk on the eve we left to have the room treated. The following day, a housekeeper (not a hotel manager!) called me, and said that I was not bitten by bedbugs...because a pest control company said they didn't see any. I've lived in Florida for over 25 years...I know what insect bites look like. It wasn't mosquitos, it wasn't no see ums or any other insect bites. I've been bitten by bedbugs in 2 locations in my life...here at Isla Bella, and a resort in Jamaica. Needless to say, it wasn't the greatest experience, but we made the best of the time. I do not recommend staying here for your Keys vacation.

Yoga at Pelican Point Isla Bella Beautiful property and loved doing Yoga with Lynne and others on the beach at Pelican Point. Lynne was great and made sure to acknowledge the fact we were on vacation and to practice at our own pace. The wind was nice and it was so relaxing! Highly recommend Lynne if you are ever in the Marathon area.
