Key West, Florida: Dazzling Sunsets, Six-Toed Cats, and Cuban Culture

Located just off Florida’s southernmost tip and north of Cuba, the island of Key West is undoubtedly the most famous of the Florida Keys. Frommer’s calls it “the land of the eternal vacation.” Most tourists come to Key West’s gulf-side beaches to snorkel, surf, or fish, but no trip to Key West is complete without a visit to the Ernest Hemingway Home & Museum, where the author lived, worked, and kept his six-toed cats. More than 50 descendants of those famous felines still prowl the grounds of the museum to this day.

At nighttime, locals and visitors alike converge on the Mallory Square Dock to watch the sun dip below the Gulf of Mexico, casting swaths of deep orange and pink against the horizon. The spectacle is so breathtaking that it inspires a sunset celebration each night. The dock comes to life with traveling psychics, one-man bands, and food vendors serving fresh-squeezed lemonade and plantain chips.

Not what we expecting We arrived at Isla Bella and from what it looked like on the website we were looking forward to it. When we arrived it looked ultra smart and everything was sorted. At check in we were given wristbands and told to follow the luggage guy in a golf cart and he would help us. His name was Theo and he came across nice, then he became very over powering and asked questions that my partner did not feel were appropriate regardless and at 850 a night even more so. The room was poor quality, there was a strange kitchen area and this had cupboards that wouldn’t close due to microwave that didn’t fit in. The floorboards had gaps on the balcony and if you spilt a drink or dropped something it was landing on people below. This was very poor design. The bar was OK on beach and Annie was really great. The sushi bar around adult pool was run by children and there open conversation in front of guests between each other was so unprofessional. The sushi was of a very low standard. I would whole heartedly not recommend this resort and believe it needs a serious change of management and direction if it wants to charge these prices. There is a complete disconnect between the staff and customers. Find a different resort like Bakers Cay you will have a much better time and the beach is nicer.

$200 in fees per night added at checkout! The rooms are clean and the grounds are beautiful. However, an additional $200 per night of added fees (room sales tax, occupancy tax, destination fee, resort fee, resort fee sales tax, resort fee occupancy tax, community impact fee, another room sales tax, another occupancy tax, overnight parking and overnight parking tax) is not with it! We prepaid for our reservation, but after a 3 night stay, we had an additional bill for $577.54 just to cover the fees that are not included in your reservation.

Amazing Resort This resort was amazing. It is fairly new, and everything was very well taken care of and clean. The food at the restaurant was excellent and the bar has the best views ever. The bartenders/servers we exceptional. This is one of the few times the resort is better than the pictures. Exceeded our expectations!!
