Plymouth, MA

Plymouth is a historic port city located on the south coast of Devon, England, nestled between the Rivers Plym and Tamar, which flow into the natural harbor of Plymouth Sound. Known as "Britain's Ocean City," it boasts a rich maritime heritage, serving as the departure point for famous voyages like the Mayflower in 1620, which carried the Pilgrims to the New World, and expeditions by explorers such as Sir Francis Drake and Captain Cook. The city was heavily damaged during World War II but has been rebuilt, featuring modern commercial and civic centers alongside historic areas like the Barbican and Sutton Harbour, with its cobbled streets and independent shops. Plymouth remains a significant naval base and a vibrant cultural hub, offering a blend of historical attractions, waterfront activities, and access to the natural beauty of the South West coastline and Dartmoor National Park.

Plymouth July weekend Stayed end of July 3 nights. Pool was nice and kid enjoyed the slide… location great very convenient walking to town and the mill etc Room spacious clean… but did not have enough hooks or rails for towels or to hang anything (one hook) You had to request housekeeping if needed . Restaurant closed in renovations we were not informed before arrival. Very dismal continental breakfast places at lobby in small table.. it was embarrassing really and entrance could have been better given it’s an old hotel. For the $$$ price we paid was disappointing.

Not what I expected So the restaurant is under renovation - I can understand that. But the continental breakfast provided instead was not up to the standards of a cheap hotel chain. They threw a couple of bowls of yogurt, fruit and wrapped danish on a table in the lobby and called it good. The coffee was super weak. When I told they desk the cup lids did not match the cups, both employees nodded and say they knew that. Apparently this was not a problem for them. You had to really fight with the bathroom door to get it to close. No closet or rod provided to hang a dress, no hook for a wet raincoat. Even the decor was bad - a giant replica of one of those postcards that shows 4 or 5 local attractions in a grid was the only picture, and the room furniture was really cheap. We paid for a premium room. The best that can be said - it was quiet and clean. Not worth paying for a "nice" hotel, though when there are no amenities. Even the provided soap and shampoo was unusable for me - it contained an ingredient I am allergic to, but the only "gift shop" appeared to be a shelf far behind the desk with a few bags of chips on it. Or maybe that was the employee's lunch.

Disappointing run down hotel We arrived with our family of five and were excited to enjoy the pool. While it was open, we were disappointed to find that the slide was closed due to staffing issues. Additionally, we noticed several maintenance concerns that detracted from our experience. For example, we saw a team member painting a water-soaked ceiling tile, which seemed like an ineffective solution. The locker room and restrooms adjacent to the pool had a plunger left out in the open, and there was no return towel bin, leading to towels being left on the floor. On a positive note, the arcade was a hit with our children and provided some fun during our stay. However, the overall atmosphere of the hotel felt quite run down, which was disappointing.

Very nice, would gladly stay again! We booked two nights on Priceline for $125/night. We had a Superior room with two queen beds on the 3rd floor. Check in was smooth & very informative. Our room was very clean & spacious with comfy beds & nice pillows. Everything was in working order: the climate control, refrigerator, the coffee maker, the 55" television, the hair dryer & the bathroom fixtures. Plenty of hot water for our showers. The closet area had 3 empty hangers. The room did not have a bathroom exhaust fan or microwave, if those things are important to you. We enjoyed the local photos of Plymouth that were in the room. We did not use the pool or spa. I am a Mayflower Descendant & purpose of our trip was to visit all the attractions. Being able to walk from the hotel to restaurants & our destinations was so convenient. My husband & would gladly return to the John Carver Inn & Spa.
