Hotel at a Glance: Kelley House

The Kelley House opened in 1742, serving as a tavern throughout the Revolutionary War before turning into a hotel. This registered Historic Inn of America is situated close to the waterfront in downtown Edgartown on Martha’s Vineyard. Intricate woodwork and brick fireplaces, as well as a historic onsite pub, help guest relive the time period the inn dates back to. You’ll be able to walk to all the town’s shops and restaurants, then come back for a dip in the pool before retiring in the comfortable, separate Garden House building.

  • Nighttime cookies and milk are served during your stay in one of the spacious and classic Garden House rooms.
  • Walk to everything: Upscale and quaint shops are a three-minute walk away, and you’ll find plenty of places to eat and stroll in downtown Edgartown.
  • Famous pub: The onsite Newes From America pub—located in one of Martha’s Vineyard’s oldest buildings—serves classic American and British pub fare, along with local beers and a micro-brewed root beer for kids.
  • Maritime artifacts and artwork add seafaring-themed touches to the inn, which is just a five-minute walk from the coast.
  • Splash around in the large outdoor pool, where you can also order snacks and drinks without changing out of your swimsuit.

Edgartown, Massachusetts: Jaws, Beaches, and Whaling History on Martha’s Vineyard

In the 1800s, Edgartown, Massachusetts, was one of America’s main whaling ports, as whaling ships from all over the world docked in its protected harbor. During this time period, ship captains built “gingerbread” mansions overlooking the harbor for their families, and these beautifully grand houses are still a major tourist draw. In fact, as the whaling business died down, Edgartown became a tourist destination, drawing crowds to its beautiful beaches and strollable downtown. The movie Jaws was filmed here, showcasing the town’s quaint resort qualities, such as its compact shopping districts and narrow streets, which are best accessed by a rented bicycle.

Head to famous South Beach for a day of tanning and splashing, or visit one of the island’s five lighthouses for sweeping ocean views and sunset tours. There’s also Chappaquiddick Island, where you can travel by ferry to fish for bluefish and striped bass or to check out the numerous wildlife preserves and lovely, uncrowded beaches.
