Gurnee, Illinois: Theme Park and Shopping near Chicago’s North Shore

Located about halfway between Chicago and Milwaukee, Gurnee is virtually synonymous with Six Flags Great America, a high-octane theme park. Typically open from May until Halloween, Six Flags features The Dark Knight coaster, an adrenalized tour of Gotham City, and Raging Bull, a hypertwister coaster reaching speeds up to 73 miles per hour. In the summer, cool down on water park attractions such as the five-story Dive Bomber slide. For a break from the park, head to Gurnee Mills, one of the state’s largest malls.

Gurnee lies just west of Chicago’s North Shore, a group of affluent suburbs along Lake Michigan. There are several sites to explore in these nearby cities. The picturesque town of Evanston, home to Northwestern University, was named one of the “Coolest Suburbs Worth a Visit” by Travel + Leisure. And in Glencoe you’ll find more than 9,000 types of plants at the Chicago Botanic Garden.

Great getaway esp for smaller children We went with our four-year-old grandson as his Christmas gift in mid January. All of the staff were very friendly and supportive of the kids. We were especially impressed with the level of training. Lifeguards Nd other staffers were very supportive and caring of the children really enthusiastic on the waterslide as well as keeping the kids safe. Also very impressed with all of the wave pool lifeguards the entire week very thorough and took their job seriously

Never Again - Go to Disney for a Better Bargain Consumer Warning for Families Considering Great Wolf Lodge in Gurnee, IL We just returned from a weekend stay and I truly wish someone had spelled this out before we booked. We did everything right: bought Wolf Pack passes in advance, downloaded the app, and tried to be budget-conscious. Despite that, we spent MORE than we did on our last Disney trip of the same length — with nowhere near the value. _ What families should know: • Room cleanliness was unacceptable — gum stuck to bedposts, socks under bunk beds that weren’t ours • No microwave or coffee maker in the room _ The hidden and add-on costs never stopped: • Parking fees • MagiQuest wands not included • Rope course charged extra despite being listed as included • $15 per towel threats if one is lost • Build-A-Bear “premium” dolls/upgrades not disclosed even after asking (we brought 6 kids) • Gem mining = $60 per bag • Food averaging $15+ per child, drinks not included, no family pricing • Even “free” refills are limited • Breakfast passes expired unexpectedly _ The resort is intentionally laid out to make it nearly impossible not to spend more. Parents trying to say no don’t stand a chance. _ Nightly dance parties last ~15 minutes and conveniently place vendors selling overpriced, low-quality bubble wands right next to excited kids. _️ Operational frustrations: • No visible arcade attendant (over an hour to fix a ticket issue) • One single cashier in the prize shop despite long lines ✅ The one positive: the waterpark itself was clean and well maintained given the crowds. _ Bottom line: Fun memories for kids, but wildly overpriced and misleading. This is not an all-inclusive experience and ended up costing more than Disney for far less return. ➡️ Next time: we’ll skip the resort, buy day passes to a waterpark, and stay in an Airbnb. Far more control, far better value. If this helps even one family avoid sticker shock, it’s worth sharing.
