Savannah, Georgia: Historical Mansions and a Lively River Walk

Founded in 1733 as Georgia's first town, Savannah is not only one of the most graceful cities in the South but also one the most historic. The old but well-preserved architecture landed it on Forbes’s 2011 list of America's Best Downtowns, and Travel + Leisure dubbed it one of the top cities in the United States and Canada in 2013. The city's 22 famous public squares play host to some famous landmarks, such as antebellum-era houses framed by moss-covered oak trees. Head to Oglethorpe Square to see the Owens-Thomas House, an English Regency–style mansion completed in 1819 that now serves as a museum; tours here depart from the original carriage house and go past its charming English-style parterre garden.

Another relic of Savannah's past, River Street curves for about a mile along Savannah River's south bank. The cobblestone walkways are lined with 100-year-old cotton warehouses that have been converted into antique shops, brewpubs, and galleries. A short walk west of River Street will take you to the City Market, a four-block public meeting space on the edge of downtown.

Noisy, cannot sleep it was so loud. Do not recommend this hotel. The room had unacceptable clanking sound from ceiling all night long 2 nights in a row. Would post video of the noise if I could here. Had to move late at night to a completely different side of the hotel. They could not accommodate my king size bed in the new room but at least I could sleep.

Lots of issues but a pretty hotel I’ll start my review by saying the Kimpton Brice is such a beautiful hotel with a rich history. The location is perfect being right across the street from River Street. Loved the Wine social hour every night and the interior decor of the hotel. But we ran into so many issues while staying here: 1. The first room we were in the AC didn’t work. So they moved us. The new room they put us in, the AC was not even adequate. Thermostat set to 67 and the room could barely get it to 75. I like to sleep cool at night. I maybe got 2 hours of sleep per night the 3 nights we were there. Had to lay on top of the bedding. By the 2nd night I wanted to check out early and drive home. 2. Our rate included free parking and free dinner for 2 per night of stay. We ended up being charged for both. I had to call the hotel during our drive home and try to get it fixed. It took over a week to get the charges on my card fixed. 3. Speaking of dinner, the food was delicious in Pacci, but the food service took forever. The 3 nights we ate there it was pretty empty, and even then it took 45 mins for our appetizer to come out, another 45 minutes for our entrees to come out. Every night a simple dinner for 2 took almost 2 hours. 4. This is minor but, the pillows were so flat, even stacking 2 on top of each other it felt like you had no pillow at all. I think this also attributed to us getting no sleep during our stay. 5. The pool area was so pretty, but the pool was absolutely freezing. It felt like ice water. Couldn’t get in. We laid by the pool and watched people try to get in and they would all be shivering and shaking. While I love the Kimpton brand and how pretty this hotel was, if I come back to Savannah I’d probably stay somewhere else.

Average hotel The hotel is a ways from downtown-really on the edge of the hotel district. It’s an average hotel, 3 star. Rooms were small but beds were comfortable and staff was excellent. Our room was close to the pool and smelled like the pool. The Kimpton allows dogs and there were lots of dogs (I love dogs but this was a bit much). I would stay downtown or the River district-closer to shops, restaurants…etc. They do a nice happy hour for guests and the restaurant does a nice breakfast.
