Nestled in the woods just above the village The Knickerbocker Mansion and Country Inn provides a moderately priced break from the hotels and an upgrade from the cabin experience. Excellent breakfast and excellent service. The rooms in the Carriage house are a bit small but we did not spend much time in the room. Mattresses could be a bit firmer. The bathroom was small but had impressive water pressure. Very nice location- rustic but close to the village.

Wake up to sweeping mountain views and a two-course breakfast at this historical log-cabin inn, located within walking distance of the lake

Big Bear Lake, California: Outdoorsy Resort Community in the Foothills of the San Bernardino Mountains

Big Bear Lake is situated nearly 7,000 feet above sea level and surrounded by the San Bernardino National Forest and the snowy peaks of the San Bernardino Mountains. Los Angeles is less than 100 miles to the west, which is probably why Big Bear Valley has served as a backdrop for so many films and TV shows, including The Parent Trap, Doctor Dolittle, and Bonanza.

The lake is a popular destination for boating, fishing, and swimming during the warm months. You’ll find miles of hiking and mountain-biking trails in the surrounding forest. The 2-mile Castle Rock Trail weaves through groves of pine and cedar trees and past a waterfall before rewarding trekkers with a panoramic view of the water. But Big Bear isn’t entirely rustic—head to the village, located on the south shore, for restaurants, shopping, an arcade, a bowling alley, and a visitors’ center.

True to its name, the area once supported a thriving grizzly-bear population. Though that’s no longer the case, you still might see bald eagles, mule deer, coyotes, gray foxes, and even the occasional bobcat or black bear. For a guaranteed glimpse of wildlife, visit the Big Bear Alpine Zoo, a rehabilitation facility for injured and orphaned mountain lions, grizzly bears, wolves, and other animals.

Anniversary Weekend Getaway! The accommodations were quite nice. The meals that they served were Outstanding. The first day we ate brunch, and it was covered. The second day we ate a delightful breakfast and it was covered. We booked with expedia and got a good price and free breakfast!! Ed the owner was very personable and sincerely concerned that we did not make it our first night. We had car issues. We loved this place and will definitely be back.

Lovely inn - but be aware of private events! We had a lovely stay two years ago at the Knickerbocker, so were looking forward another quiet, romantic visit. Unfortunately, the first sign of trouble was during our check-in, when we were asked if we were there for the wedding (we weren’t – what wedding?). When we inquired about the next morning’s breakfast arrangements, were told that it wasn’t included in the room rate and that reservations were needed (a bit of a disappointment.) Then they remembered to tell us that be breakfast would not be offered that morning due to the private event (the wedding, again.) So no breakfast available at a B&B – even for a price… WiFi was supposed to be available; we were told that the password was on a card in our room (there was no card), then we were given a password that didn’t work. The mansion and the grounds are beautiful, and if it weren’t for the wedding on Saturday, we would have had a chance to enjoy them. Instead we were pretty much stuck in our room, with the wedding and the reception going on just outside. The DJ played music until after 9pm, the other guests (those there for the wedding) paraded back and forth past our room all afternoon and evening. Since we couldn’t easily make our breakfast reservation for the following morning with the wedding festivities going on, we left early the next day. In our opinion, the innkeepers really should have contacted us ahead of time to notify us of the wedding event and given us a chance to rebook for another date. Our advice to others? Make sure that there isn’t a private event on the weekend you plan to stay.

Vacation Nice couple and good breakfast. Average room, dark, air quality lacking. No AC if you need it for hot weather. TV does not work well. Good location both near town, all amenities and yet a bit secluded.

weekend stay We stayed on a recent Friday and Saturday night and were thrilled with everything! The rooms are small but well equipped if you're not planning on being ion the room all day. Savannah and Sasha made the stay outstanding with their friendly service. Will definitely stay here again.
