Family-Friendly Resort on Delavan Lake
More than a thousand years ago, Native Americans filled effigy mounds with spearheads, pottery pieces, and other ephemera around Swan Lake, which is now known as Delavan Lake. You can find more than 40 of these mounds on the premises of Lake Lawn Resort, set on 250 wooded acres overlooking the lake. A TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence winner, the resort is conveniently situated within an hour of Milwaukee and two hours of Chicago, offering a pleasant retreat from city life. Here you can take part in an assortment of onsite recreation activities. Take a dip in one of two outdoor pools or one indoor pool, visit the Activity Center for watersport or bicycle rentals, or to play a round of miniature golf, tee off at the resort’s 18-hole Majestic Oaks Golf Course with driving range, or relax at the full service Calladora Spa. A 15% discount on services at Calladora Spa, excluding Saturdays, is included.
The warm confines of the guest rooms complement the woodsy surroundings. Each one features a view of the grounds, and some include lake views. Amenities vary from room to room, but they may include a massage tub or a private balcony.
If you’re hungry, you can grab a meal at one of Lake Lawn Resort’s three onsite restaurants (seasonal hours may apply). Executive chef David Ross uses fresh herbs in his dishes. Savor flame-grilled steaks in the Frontier Restaurant, where every table looks out on a panoramic vista of Delavan Lake, or grab a drink at the Frontier Fireside Lounge. At Lookout Bar & Eatery, you can watch sports on big-screen TVs or catch live entertainment.
Delavan, Wisconsin: 19th-Century History and Wooded Landscapes near Lake Geneva
More than a century ago, Delavan blossomed into a circus headquarters where dozens of trapeze artists, contortionists, clowns, and exotic animals were based, including those who performed in P.T. Barnum’s legendary Greatest Show on Earth. Tower Park pays homage to this history with colorful statues of giraffes, elephants, and other animals.
Delavan’s early days live on through Greek Revival architecture dating back to the mid-1800s. Notable buildings include the Allyn Mansion and the Israel Stowell Temperance House. The quaint downtown district features several antique stores and small cafes amid old-fashioned lampposts and brick-paved walkways.
