Lake Placid, New York: Mountain Recreation and Small-Town Charm in the Adirondacks

Nestled in northeastern New York’s Adirondack Mountains, the village of Lake Placid is actually set on the shores of Mirror Lake, just south of Lake Placid proper. Year-round, folks flock to the area to take advantage of its abundant opportunities for outdoor recreation and to see the site of the “Miracle on Ice”—the US hockey team’s heart-stopping upset victory over the Soviets in 1980.

Less than 10 miles away, Whiteface Lake Placid ski resort boasts one of the largest vertical drops east of the Rockies for downhill skiing and snowboarding, and ice-fishers can be seen trying their luck on the surface of the lake. Along Lake Placid’s quaint Main Street, you’ll find a string of boutiques and curio shops, along with galleries and workshops where you can watch artisans blowing glass. Wine-tasting rooms and bakeries offer a sampling of local flavors.

Room was clean and staff was very friendly. Only thing bad was bar was closed. Was looking forward to sitting at bar having drink overlooking the lake.

This hotel provided a decent place to sleep. It is close to Main Street. If you don't require the full lap of luxury, then this is the place for you. Staff was excellent. I rated it a 3 because the breakfast option of prepackaged little doughnuts was laughable. They have a bar on the premises, but it wasn't open any of the days we were there. Finally, it had the feel that the owners were from out of town and were not interested in keeping the facility maintained as well as it could or should have been. Overall, we were not displeased with our stay at the Summit. I would go back again. the price was right.
