Lake Placid, New York: Mountain Recreation and Small-Town Charm in the Adirondacks

Nestled in northeastern New York’s Adirondack Mountains, the village of Lake Placid is actually set on the shores of Mirror Lake, just south of Lake Placid proper. Year-round, folks flock to the area to take advantage of its abundant opportunities for outdoor recreation and to see the site of the “Miracle on Ice”—the US hockey team’s heart-stopping upset victory over the Soviets in 1980.

Less than 10 miles away, Whiteface Lake Placid ski resort boasts one of the largest vertical drops east of the Rockies for downhill skiing and snowboarding, and ice-fishers can be seen trying their luck on the surface of the lake. Along Lake Placid’s quaint Main Street, you’ll find a string of boutiques and curio shops, along with galleries and workshops where you can watch artisans blowing glass. Wine-tasting rooms and bakeries offer a sampling of local flavors.

Dump but great location Total dump (but great location so all in all it can work). When we arrived we stood in the lobby ringing the bell (and I even called from my cell to no answer), for nearly 30 min before someone arrived to Check us in. The halls, rooms are desperately in need of updates. Our curtains are hanging by only a few hooks and the there are holes in the bathroom wall where the hair dryer should hang. I would DEFINITELY look for something else, however we are town for the Ironman and didn’t have a choice (our Vrbo canceled at the last minute….). My real gripe is that we are paying $600/ night for a dump- if you can get a more reasonable rate and only need it to sleep and shower (the shower is pretty good!) then maybe……I’d still look around

Didn’t even stay the night. We reserved the hotel for 10/30 and 10/31/ 2020. We got our room around 1 p.m. and found cob webs in the corners of the room. My wife said I’m not staying in this room, so we changed rooms. The next room had the door jam where the lock should be to be missing so the door wasn’t secure. The heat in the room was at 80 degrees and we couldn’t get the heat shut off. I unplugged the heater and reset it. We left the room to go to lunch and when we came back the room was over 80 degrees again. We had enough and went to the front desk to get our money back and leave. The place is a dump.

Not bad and not great The hotel is a bit worn down, but the rooms were clean and the front desk staff was kind. The breakfast was not very exciting but it is always nice to have this option. The location is great with easy access to downtown.
