Groupon charges you 12% tax and $4.5/night city tax. What city tax (San Jose city or Lake Tahoe city tax) ? And why I have to pay Lake Tahoe city tax again when check in at resort?

$4.5/nt city tax goes to the city. You are not paying it again upon check-in. It's one time charge.

Q:

My groupon room rate for standards studio is 58$ per night, 2 nights are 116$ for the nights of 4/13 & 4/14/14, how come you charge me 23.16 tax & fee, total for 2 nights is $141.16, what is that? How come I have to pay tax for the room at groupon & pay another tax & fee & 20$ resort fee at resort? Why is double tax to rent a room at groupon and resort? In this case, I did contact direct with resort and they said , I can buy direct from them and pay only tax & fee at the resort only, no NEED TO PAY TAX FOE GROUPON. Please explain this case. I think I am going to cancel the voucher and buy direct to avoid double tax. Does any one buy or rent a room online have to pay double tax? Resort fee is acceptable, no have to pay tax online and pay tax at hotel resort.

QUANG S.  asked on  Feb 12, 2014

A:

Groupon charges you 12% tax and $4.5/night city tax, so total tax is $22.92 based on $116 rates. Resort will collect $20/night+tax resort fee, you are not getting double charged. If you book with the resort directly, you will still need to pay the same taxes.
