San Marcos, California: Quiet Historical Town with Popular Breweries

San Marcos is less than an hour from downtown San Diego, making it a quick day trip from such family-friendly attractions as Balboa Park and the San Diego Zoo, which is home to thousands of animals, including rare giant pandas.

Though it’s close to San Diego, San Marcos is a relatively quiet college town (home to a California State University campus and the University of St. Augustine) situated in a valley surrounded by rolling green hills. For dinner, browse Old California Restaurant Row, which is lined with more than a dozen old-fashioned saloons and restaurants that serve Thai, Indian, and teppanyaki-style Japanese cuisine. Restaurant Row also hosts a seasonal hot-rod car show. You can also visit popular breweries such as Stone Brewing Co. for tours and beer samples.

I didn't book two double beds. I booked king bed with Lake view. This is a great hotel in a sleeply little town. The lobby is very nicely decorated. I don't know how many people actually uses it though. Our rate included a small smores package at check in which we got. Also part of our room package was 1 hr kayak around the lake. If you get the tandem kayak, then it'll be good. But if you prefer to have your own kayak like us, it's $20. I think I saw other groupons for kayak/pontoon rental on this lake so look out for those if there's more in your party. I'm so glad we got the lake view because it was much quieter than the pool view. The pool was busy with families and kids. The pool was not heated which I guess if you go during the summer would be nice. We also took advantage of the bucket of golf balls at their driving range. There's a restaurant there so you can sit by the firepit and watch your husband practice his swings. Room service and lunch meals are fairly good size enough to share. There's a nice restaurant by the dock that seems to be the spot where all the locals go. It was very busy and first come first served. The hotel also has a couple beach cruisers too but we didn't get a chance to take advantage of it.

My family did a little getaway and stayed in a lake view room. It was nice and relaxing I love having a view of the water and the fountain was really nice. It changes colors at night the room was nice and clean with a nice big shower overall it's a really nice place to getaway. And the kid's really liked the kayaking on the lake.
