Hotel at a Glance: Lamothe House

Located in the Faubourg Marigny neighborhood, Lamothe House is close to many of the city’s notable venues for live music. It’s just two blocks from Frenchmen Street, home to three out of five music bars that locals voted the best in the city for the Times-Picayune’s 2016 readers’ choice awards. Six blocks from the hotel, the French Quarter buzzes with tunes from jazz and brass bands.

  • Best way to relax: with a dip in the outdoor pool or hot tub, set in the courtyard
  • Deluxe rooms have Aveda bath products and free WiFi.
  • Three ways to stay: Rooms are located in the main house, the carriage house behind the courtyard, and a guest house across the street,
  • Big Easy style: The main building’s pink façade is adorned with shutters and wrought-iron balconies.

New Orleans’s French Quarter: Let the Good Times Roll

“Stop thinking of New Orleans as the worst-organized city in the United States,” writes author Dan Baum in Nine Lives, his post-Katrina book. “Start thinking of it as the best-organized city in the Caribbean.” Some folks think there is something distinctly foreign about New Orleans, a place where people’s priorities seem inclined toward enjoying life and relishing the moment at hand. Nothing says it better than the town’s unofficial Cajun creed: “Laissez les bons temp rouler,” or “Let the good times roll.”

Historical buildings with intricate wrought-iron balconies line the narrow streets of New Orleans’s French Quarter. Here, street musicians often fill the air with jazz music, their trombones and tubas swinging back and forth. Just off the Jackson Square park and near the towering St. Louis Cathedral, the legendary Café Du Monde serves beignets under heaping piles of powdered sugar. The nearby Frenchmen Street, just north of the Quarter, provides a slightly less touristy taste of New Orleans nightlife. Some of the city’s most popular live jazz and blues bars dominate this historic two-block district, with each venue hosting world-class musicians nearly every night of the week. And then there’s Bourbon Street, where neon lights advertise frozen cocktails and crowds gather along 13 city blocks.

Not Great The place is ok if you don’t expect a lot. There were just a lot of things you take for granted in other places that weren’t here. For starters. The picture shown here of the entry must be VERY old. I don’t think it’s seen a paint brush since then. They didn’t have a mat inside the door, someone had thrown down a bath towel. There was no heat in the room during the cold snap, our room was 65°. There isn’t recirculating hot water so you have to wait several minutes waiting for it in the shower and waste quite a bit of water in the process. There was only one hanger in the armoire, so good luck hanging anything up. The towel rack fell off the wall the first night and there was no shower curtain. Wifi worked for about the first 8 hours of a 3 day stay, the staff was pretty ambivalent, just shrugged and said “yeah, maybe it’s the weather”. The mostly empty popcorn maker off the lobby wasn’t cleaned for 2 days. We like the place for its proximity to Frenchmen St., but it’s hard to overlook this kind of stuff.

A Hidden Gem Close to the French Quarter I recently stayed at Lamothe House during a solo 3-night solo visit to the Big Easy. This place is a hidden gem and definitely for those who favor old world charm over modern (soulless) designs and brand new everything etc. It’s in a quiet neighborhood yet a short walk to the French Quarter. The courtyard and pool are quite lovely. The Misses Carol, Carlette, and Shwanda (I apologize for any misspellings) are extremely kind, helpful, and gems in their own right. The only reason I’m rating this place a 4/5 is that the coffee maker in my room did not work, though in fairness to the hotel staff, I didn’t raise this issue while there. I would NOT hesitate to stay here again or recommend this place to anyone I know planning a visit to NOLA.

Lovely Boutique Hotel near Frenchman St but Quiet, Clean & Fabulous Pool Beautiful property, well maintained & clean. My king room was spacious, comfortable & didn’t I catch his name but guy at check-in was very pleasant. The biggest highlights are the Pool - it’s clean, plenty of seating & so refreshing!!. The location can’t be beat. It’s literally 1 block from Frenchman St - so close enough to Bourbon but far away enough to be quiet & civilized. Highly recommend (& ask for a room by the “back gate” and you are even closer to all the action!)
