Hotel at a Glance: Lamothe House

Located in the Faubourg Marigny neighborhood, Lamothe House is close to many of the city’s notable venues for live music. It’s just two blocks from Frenchmen Street, home to three out of five music bars that locals voted the best in the city for the Times-Picayune’s 2016 readers’ choice awards. Six blocks from the hotel, the French Quarter buzzes with tunes from jazz and brass bands.

  • Best way to relax: with a dip in the outdoor pool or hot tub, set in the courtyard
  • Deluxe rooms have Aveda bath products and free WiFi.
  • Three ways to stay: Rooms are located in the main house, the carriage house behind the courtyard, and a guest house across the street,
  • Big Easy style: The main building’s pink façade is adorned with shutters and wrought-iron balconies.

New Orleans’s French Quarter: Let the Good Times Roll

“Stop thinking of New Orleans as the worst-organized city in the United States,” writes author Dan Baum in Nine Lives, his post-Katrina book. “Start thinking of it as the best-organized city in the Caribbean.” Some folks think there is something distinctly foreign about New Orleans, a place where people’s priorities seem inclined toward enjoying life and relishing the moment at hand. Nothing says it better than the town’s unofficial Cajun creed: “Laissez les bons temp rouler,” or “Let the good times roll.”

Historical buildings with intricate wrought-iron balconies line the narrow streets of New Orleans’s French Quarter. Here, street musicians often fill the air with jazz music, their trombones and tubas swinging back and forth. Just off the Jackson Square park and near the towering St. Louis Cathedral, the legendary Café Du Monde serves beignets under heaping piles of powdered sugar. The nearby Frenchmen Street, just north of the Quarter, provides a slightly less touristy taste of New Orleans nightlife. Some of the city’s most popular live jazz and blues bars dominate this historic two-block district, with each venue hosting world-class musicians nearly every night of the week. And then there’s Bourbon Street, where neon lights advertise frozen cocktails and crowds gather along 13 city blocks.

A beautiful house and the staff makes it 5 stars! I loved staying here. Miss Carol and all of her colleagues were warm, welcoming, and made me feel very much at home. Tim on the night desk was also fantastic. My first room had an issue with the back gate slamming and they moved me into a quiet room that was definitely an upgrade. It is so central to all the areas I wanted to explore: The French Quarter, the Marigny, Bywater are all close by, and the streetcar system easily accesses the CBD, Garden District and Irish Channel neighborhoods. The pool is beautiful and so appreciated in the early summer heat. Hot tub wasn't very hot but in this weather, not a problem. There is some shade over the pool with the beautiful trees surrounding the pool. My room and the public areas were clean, clean, clean! My four nights at the Lamothe House were perfect.

Location, location, location! We've stayed at this place several times over the years, specifically in the annex rooms across the street from the main hotel (401, etc). Last time I stayed here I was determined not to stay again because those rooms were just trashed. There were loose marble tiles in the bathroom that almost cut my toe, the wooden floor was in dire need of refinishing, and the family members who stayed in other rooms had non-working sinks and toilets, etc. Not to mention the house next door was being remodeled and there was a portapotty practically right in front of our room. When we traveled to NOLA this time, it was only for 2 nights and every other place we looked into required a 3-night stay. So we stayed here anyway, figuring the location was great enough that we could deal with some issues with the rooms. Imagine our surprise when we got there and saw that every room had been beautifully renovated! Not only that, the house next door is finished and there is no more fencing or portapottys to make everything look extra trashy. So this time I can say without any hesitation that this is the absolute best place to stay near the Quarter. It's 1/2 block fro the R Bar, blocks from good food, about a ten-min walk to Lorraine's for beignets, 5 min from JamNola, 2 blocks from Frenchmen St and maybe 3 blocks from the river, French Market, etc. You can hear the brass bands from the front porch when they play out on the street in front of Willie's Chicken Shack! :) Free parking, a pool, hot tub, and ice across the street, a lovely front porch from which to people watch....There is simply no reason to stay anyplace else. I'd love a refrigerator in the rooms, but other than that, this was a perfect stay!

Charming! We had a wonderful experience staying at this lovely guest house for Mardi Gras 2025. Perfectly located and beautifully maintained outside areas. I wanted to make a special thank you to the staff, especially Gabby who gave us the warmest welcome we could have hoped for! If she reads this? It’s Thomas with the diamonds and nice smell! Haha. This place is minutes walk from all the action if that’s what you need! Bear in mind that the property extends across the street at the back and we had the furthest room from reception. Not a problem for us but something to note. You have to exit the main property and cross a street to get to the final set of rooms but it’s not far. Overall this was a super charming stay and we loved the pool! Rooms were clean and tidy. Thanks Lamothe I would definitely stay here again!
