Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic: Waterfalls, Beaches, and Centuries-Old Historical Sites

Located on the northern coast of the Dominican Republic, Puerto Plata is famous for its golden beaches and stunning natural beauty. Beyond the shore, the region boasts breathtaking inland landscapes, including Damajagua—a natural wonder featuring 27 cascading waterfalls carved into limestone formations. Guided tours lead visitors through the falls, where they can swim and slide down naturally formed water chutes.

For a spectacular aerial view of Puerto Plata and the Caribbean Sea, take a ride on the teleférico (cable car), which ascends 2,565 feet to the summit of Mount Isabel de Torres. At the top, you’ll find lush botanical gardens and a striking replica of Rio de Janeiro’s iconic Christ the Redeemer statue. A scenic drive to Parque Histórico La Isabela reveals the remnants of a historic church and the ruins of one of the first European settlements in the Americas.

We had an amazing time. The people were very friendly and professional. The VIP access was amazing. We got served food and drinks and didn’t have to get them ourselves. We also had access to the VIP pool which was very private. The beach was wonderful as well as we were VIP guess and had beds on the beach.

Just my review ( Just would like everyone going down to this resort know that the rooms closest to the lobby and buffet are terrible ,,we had water seeping in our room from air conditioning and there is mold in the bathrooms I mean a lot and the shower glass wasn’t ever cleaned had to do it myself , we had no hot water for about three days and when we had it it was just warm .one of our friends got sick with what we think was food poisoning ,he was so sick he was in bed for 31 hours and the last day I had bacon and got desperately sick…I mean so sick they asked me at the airport if I needed a doctor I said no I just want to go home… the food was terrible I really terrible,,,you even had to ask for bacon which I wish I didn’t .the rooms are run down and dirty..I shall never return there,,we were a group of six and shall never I mean never go to this place , I’ve been travelling down south for at least 17 years and even Cuba has never been this awful ..just be aware and read all reviews ..everything is decent was either for vip or members only couldn’t even get French fries or ice cream .there no place for children or seniors to go in swimming at the beach because the waves were so powerful..there are no chairs at the beach ,what little beach that was there.. I’m glad to be home

Sub-standard room We didn’t have water in our shower until Thursday (2/5). There was only a trickle of warm water coming out of the sink. There were no chairs or luggage racks in the room. We are two older ladies having to work out of our suitcases on the floor. There was a broken down cabinet there but there was no way we would put any of our clothes in it. They did give us white bath cloths but the towels (both hand &bath) which had once been white were a tattered dingy gray color. The telephone didn’t work. The sliding glass doors didn’t lock. Which did not make us feel very safe. There was a big crack in the glass at the shower. It was cold the first couple of nights and there was no heat. The employees were nice and very helpful. It could have been a nice vacation had the room not been so bad.
