Pawleys Island, South Carolina: Laid-Back Beach Town with Antebellum Architecture

Located about 25 miles south of Myrtle Beach, tiny Pawleys Island charms visitors with its laid-back vibe and rich history. The historic district has a number of rustic beach cottages that date back to the late 1700s, when the barrier island was inhabited by wealthy rice-plantation owners. One of these estates is now home to the Caledonia Golf & Fish Club. Named 1 of America’s 100 Greatest Public Courses by Golf Digest in 2017, the grounds are dotted with centuries-old live oaks and feature an antebellum-style clubhouse. The island’s year-round temperate climate makes golfing a popular pastime no matter when you visit.

At the Hammock Shops Village, you can check out an Audubon store, a candle maker’s shop, and more than 20 other specialty boutiques and restaurants. Built in 1938, the village is surrounded by gardens teeming with moss-draped oaks and azaleas. And, true to its name, the Hammock Shops Village provides hammocks and rockers for pausing and slipping into siestas.

Don’t believe the pics online. Worn out condo! The oceanfront condo we rented was in poor condition. The door to the balcony had no handle and did not move. You could literally see outside thru the holes in the door. Moldy shower, dirty stained carpet, a sofa so filthy I had to cover it with a sheet before we sat on it,poorly stocked kitchen with rusted baking sheets. The pictures online did not reflect the condition of the unit. Also, the included “free breakfast” was a buffet with empty containers for pancakes and eggs and cold food in the others. Other than the beachfront location there was not a positive there. I did respond to their mid stay survey indicating issues and no one got back to me.

Needs a major face lift On the plus side, the beach access/location and the Bridgewater building lazy river pool/other amenities were very nice. Being January, we didn't use most but they were available. Staff we interacted with were all professional and friendly. Main reason for low ratings was the room. Only thing I can say good about it was the view, however the windows were dirty, so even that wasn't so great. Overall, the room was in serious need of a major renovation. Paint chipping, all appliances/cabinets/utensils/glassware were from 1990. Bathrooms haven't been updated. Toilet in main bedroom broke and both toilets were sized for someone who is 4"2". (Maintenance did respond very quickly and fixed the broken toilet.) As to room furnishings, I have seen better furniture at the habitat restore. Main room TV was 32" wide so again 1990. I wish I could write a better review as the location was great, but the rooms reminded me of an overpriced Motel 6, so the value for the room price was not in as expected.

If you want hot water and polite staff don't stay here. We were told after our we had checked in that there was a "hot water issue" that would be resolved shortly, by 10:30 pm we still had no hot water for showers. I called the front desk and the attendant was one of the rudest individuals I have ever dealt with at a "resort." They continued to tell me the issue was resolved when I was quite clearly telling him we had no hot water. What a rip off for the money we paid.
