PAWLEYS ISLAND: A Coastal Gem Steeped in History

Nestled along the serene shores of South Carolina’s Lowcountry, Pawleys Island is a coastal haven that boasts a rich history dating back to the 17th century. Known as one of the oldest beach resorts in America, it has long been a retreat for wealthy plantation owners seeking respite from the heat of the inland. The island's quiet charm is encapsulated in its weathered beach cottages and scenic marsh views, offering a rare glimpse into the grandeur of bygone eras. Pawleys Island retains its historical authenticity, where ancient oaks and saltwater breezes mingle to create an atmosphere of timeless relaxation.

Once a prominent center for rice and indigo plantations, the island today blends historical significance with natural beauty. Its pristine beaches, often untouched by large-scale development, are ideal for tranquil getaways. The nearby Waccamaw River and its rich estuarine ecosystem invite outdoor enthusiasts, while Pawleys Island’s proximity to Georgetown and Myrtle Beach offers visitors the best of both worlds—solitude and the vibrancy of nearby urban attractions. Whether strolling along the historic Pawleys Island Creek or soaking in the local culture, this picturesque locale preserves the essence of Southern coastal living.

Deceptive Billing and Subpar Quality Deceptive Billing and Subpar Quality - Unauthorized Premium Charge Stay Dates: September 18 - September 21, 2025 My experience at Litchfield Resort was ruined by what I believe to be fraudulent billing practices and deceptive staff conduct. 1. Fraudulent Billing and Misrepresentation: My confirmed reservation total was for a specific rate. At check-in, I asked about an upgrade and was charged an unexpected final payment that was substantially higher than my original total. The difference was an undisclosed, extra charge (a premium amount). When I questioned the significant increase, the front desk agent explicitly told me the excess fee was a refundable security deposit. This is FALSE. The resort's own policy states: "guests are not required to put down a security deposit at time of arrival." I was lied to at the point of sale. This premium amount was an undisclosed, non-refundable upgrade fee. 2. Poor Facility Maintenance: Adding insult to injury after being charged an undisclosed premium, the resort’s common facilities (including showers and gym areas) showed clear evidence of neglect and poor maintenance: Water/Mold Damage: Sagging ceiling tiles and damaged trim (see photo). Unsanitary Fixtures: Soap/shampoo dispensers were dirty, cracked, and filled with old residue (see photos). I strongly caution all future guests. The resort has ignored my formal emails, including one sent to the General Manager, Andrew Maffei. I have now filed formal complaints with the Better Business Bureau (BBB) and the South Carolina Department of Consumer Affairs (SCDCA) regarding the deceptive charging practices and misrepresentation of fees.

What a disappointment Our room was filthy and had cockroaches. The floors left the bottoms of our feet nearly black after just a few minutes, every surface in the kitchen was sticky, there were dirty dished in the cabinets, the individual coffee packets were open, the toilet seat was not attached on one side (how do you not know this if you cleaned it), the shower curtain was moldy, etc. It was so bad, I had to buy cleaning supplies and spend time doing it myself. I was told I would receive a call or email from management but did not. The location is great and the grounds were beautiful, but a clean place to say is a basic necessity so neither of those things matter if you have missed the mark so horribly. We also had no hot water for 24 hours, one hand towel for two bathrooms and no resort information in the room (policies, hours, etc). The kitchen light only worked 50% of the time. One bathroom fan didn't work and the other sounded like a helicopter landing. The dryer vented directly into the bathroom and turned the bathroom/bedroom into a sauna. The only way to access the beach before 8:15 am was to walk through the sprinklers watering the sidewalks. By themselves, not one of these things is terrible - not even the hot water. However, all of these things together really made the stay unpleasant. We would have loved to return but, based on recent reviews, things seem to be getting worse, not better.

Please improve your service Called the front desk repeatedly to have the tv fixed in the unit and to repair a bedroom light fixture. Finally at 6:30 Deek and Toby came and fixed the problems. They explained they had been off for two days and were catching up for what had not been done. They are nice guys and are the best! In addition there is only one chair on the balcony. House keeping is good supplying plenty of towels
