PAWLEYS ISLAND: A Coastal Gem Steeped in History

Nestled along the serene shores of South Carolina’s Lowcountry, Pawleys Island is a coastal haven that boasts a rich history dating back to the 17th century. Known as one of the oldest beach resorts in America, it has long been a retreat for wealthy plantation owners seeking respite from the heat of the inland. The island's quiet charm is encapsulated in its weathered beach cottages and scenic marsh views, offering a rare glimpse into the grandeur of bygone eras. Pawleys Island retains its historical authenticity, where ancient oaks and saltwater breezes mingle to create an atmosphere of timeless relaxation.

Once a prominent center for rice and indigo plantations, the island today blends historical significance with natural beauty. Its pristine beaches, often untouched by large-scale development, are ideal for tranquil getaways. The nearby Waccamaw River and its rich estuarine ecosystem invite outdoor enthusiasts, while Pawleys Island’s proximity to Georgetown and Myrtle Beach offers visitors the best of both worlds—solitude and the vibrancy of nearby urban attractions. Whether strolling along the historic Pawleys Island Creek or soaking in the local culture, this picturesque locale preserves the essence of Southern coastal living.

0/10. Terrible experience My family has been vacationing at Litchfield for over 15 years. My stepmother booked the rental units back in November of 2024. She booked an Osprey and Heron Marsh unit. Upon arrival last week, she was told the Osprey unit was "uninhabitable" and that they would give us Oyster Catcher 12. When we went to this unit, it was unbelievable what they tried to pass as clean. Yes, beds were made and indoor trash cans were empty, but the unit smelled like cat urine. Upon further inspection, the dishes has been left in the dishwasher and there was a rotten fish odor that made me physically gag. There was a random, rusty screen door being stored in the bedroom closet. The upstairs bathroom had pubic hair and urine left on the toilet lid. It clearly had not been cleaned. Another closet had a mattress on the floor with random sheets and blankets thrown in it. There was also mold was growing on the door. We went back to the registration office and they said they would have the place cleaned while we were at dinner. Two hours later we came back and nothing had been cleaned. We went back to registration and they said it would be cleaned first thing in the morning with the head of housekeeping and we were placed in a different unit for the night. We got up in the morning and went to the Oyster Catcher unit and nothing had been cleaned. At that point we refused to stay in the unit and they kept saying they would try to find us a new unit. We waited all day before we had to take a unit across the highway by the golf course. We were three miles away from our other family members and had to drive back and forth through the entry gate. My stepmom had rented four golf carts that were hardly used and the unit we had originally rented, that was "uninhabitable", had people staying in it less than 48 hours later. We were repeatedly told that the resort manager would call to discuss our issues. It's been over a week and we are still waiting on that phone call. After all of this, we will book somewhere else next year.

This place is a scam!! SCAM!! DO NOT STAY HERE!! Booked a Bridgewater Oceanfront Suite. Two days prior to my arrival I received a phone call from the resort telling me I had been upgraded to a Bridgewater Oceanfront Two Bedroom Suite. This was a SCAM! Upon arrival for check in I was told that the Bridgewater was only available for 1 night. I would have to check out the next morning by 11am and come back at 4 pm “to see what was available. Having a toddler and a car full of groceries not to mention I had already Prepaid for the Bridgewater for 4 days/3 nights this was not going to work. I told them I would take any room that was CLEAN. I was given a suite at the summer house. I asked if I would be refunded the difference in room rate between Bridgewater and Summer House and I was told no, but they would give me a coupon for $2 dollars off ice cream …. SCAM. Remember, I asked for any clean room? lol SCAM. One bed had STAINS all over the pillow cases and the other bed had a heating pad and boot in it. As for the bathroom the toilet was covered in fecal matter. I have pictures but I’ll spare you. Called the front desk several times no one ever answered. Went back down to the lobby to find a long line of people with room issues. At that point since I’ve already been scammed and they had my money and obviously weren’t gonna do anything I went to Walmart and bought cleaning supplies, blankets and towels. During our stay I called several times nobody ever answered I even sent emails and text messages all of which went unanswered. The website states that they have pool cabana rentals. SCAM.. Beach chair rental.. SCAM . Upon Check out I found that I was charged $210 for housekeeping services SCAM housekeeping never even walked by our door. Overall this rundown resort is just a scam. Save your money stay somewhere else.

Dirty and horrible costumer service Extremely disappointed with our stay at Litchfield Resort. We were charged a $175 housekeeping fee but received virtually no housekeeping service. Our room was not clean upon arrival—dusty surfaces, grime in the bathroom, and a general run-down feel. For a one-bedroom condo that sleeps six, we had five guests and were only given four towels. Housekeeping came by Friday to take our used towels but left only two clean ones and a pile of hand towels—no trash removal, no fresh linens, and definitely no cleaning. Despite multiple requests—calls, texts, and in-person visits to the front desk—we never received more towels. On Sunday, we had no towels at all to shower with before checkout. The elevator was also broken, so we had to lug all of our belongings down from the third floor with no assistance. Repeated requests to speak with a supervisor went unanswered. I left my number and called several times, but no one has bothered to return my calls. This was supposed to be a relaxing beach getaway, but it turned into a stressful, frustrating experience. The room was outdated and poorly maintained, the service was nonexistent, and communication was a joke. I absolutely do not recommend this resort and will not be returning.
