Houston, Texas: Space History, Museums, and World-Class Dining in Nation’s Fourth-Largest City

As the nation’s fourth-largest city by population, Houston has established itself as one of the Gulf Coast’s most thriving cultural hubs. The city has 19 museums covering everything from history to art to science. For art lovers, the Menil Collection—which Frommer’s calls “one of the world’s great private collections”—is a must-see. Here, you’ll browse a wide array of 20th-century art from Jasper Johns, René Magritte, and Andy Warhol, as well as artifacts from Africa and the Pacific Islands.

You could also spend an entire day exploring Houston’s science institutions. When Apollo 13 astronaut Jim Lovell famously stated, “Houston, we have a problem,” he was talking to mission control at Space Center Houston. Here, visitors can tour the historic mission-control room and get a behind-the-scenes look at astronauts training for the International Space Station. Along Houston’s Hermann Park, The Health Museum exhibits a large-scale human body that you can enter to learn about how your organs operate.

For shopping, visit Uptown Park, an outdoor mall that brings to mind an Italian piazza through Romanesque columns, stone fountains, and open-air bistros with strings of twinkling lights. According to a Zagat survey, Houstonians dine out more than anyone else in the country, and this mall offers some of the city’s best eats, from sushi to Spanish tapas to creamy cupcakes.

Boutique, let’s hope not What a dump. Public areas were disgusting. I pointed out to three different managers that the restrooms were vile and over a two day period of time nothing was done. The shower curtain on our suite had some type of brown/rust colored bodily fluid smeared all over it and on the wall. I took three calls to managers and my raising my voice to get anything done. Further, Westin doesn’t seem to care because there is no one to speak with. The only people in that entire building that had a concept of customer service were the bar tender and the maintenance man. He was awesome and even left a note apologizing for our troubles. He should be the manager as the others could learn from him. If you have a choice, don’t waste your money on the Magnolia in Houston. I thought it would be a fun departure from bigger flags but I was totally wrong.

No Services! We came to Houston for a business trip. There are five different rooms in our group. There is no bar open. There is no restaurant open. They do not service your room while you’re here. There’s a weak breakfast spot that is very slow, but open in the morning. If you’re coming to Houston, and expecting any kind of an evening or afternoon life, don’t stay here!. They blame the fact that they cannot find employees, and they don’t clean your room. Find somewhere that still services your room.

Great long weekend The hotel is lovely and the staff is excellent. I imagine it is really great when things are back to normal! The location is in a perfect part of downtown. They are dog freely and do not charge. I give them 5 stars. There was no scary, freaked out Covid feel. It was very relaxing and fun. Great valet staff too. (I am in the USA so the question about English speaking staff below is very odd!)
