New Orleans’ Central Business District: Vibrant Downtown with Lots of Historic Character

In the 1960s, many of the historic neighborhoods of the Central Business District were torn down to make way for high-rise office buildings and parking lots. Had a preservationist group not intervened, the neighborhood would have looked a lot different today. They not only salvaged many of the neighborhood’s 19th- and 20th- century buildings, but also much of its character. Today, you can see some of this character at historic Lafayette Square, which hosts free concerts and movies.

If you’re in the mood for some shopping, head to The Shops at Canal Place, a massive indoor shopping complex along the Mississippi River. From here, you can easily walk to Harrah’s, the Audubon Aquarium of the Americas, and other attractions along the riverfront or take the St. Charles streetcar past antebellum mansions and southern live oaks en route to the Garden District to the south.

Great staff, ok room. The staff was extremely friendly and helpful, however, the room had several issues. The tub kept clogging even though someone was sent to fix it, there was water leaking from the ceiling in the bathroom, and the AC did not seem to be working at full capacity. The breakfast was extremely basic with just bread products and some apples. Despite my lower than usual rating, I do want to emphasize that the staff was fantastic. Particularly Samuel and Kerry went above and beyond to help us have the best trip possible.

Good and bad Good: location, clean, comfortable bed, daily housekeeping, responsive staff. Bad: no towel racks, no drawers, only one hanger in the closet (they brought more upon request), coffee supplies were not replaced until requested. Breakfast was almost gone when I arrived at 9 AM. Street was LOUD. But this is NOLA. I pulled in the ironing board to set things on

Many little inconveniences added up Review Pros: - Location to Canal St, the French Quarter, Riverwalk, ferries, etc. learned too late how to ride the street cars. $3 every 24 hours for unlimited rides is really nice. - Great cafes nearby - Hotel was clean and smelled great - Staff was very nice Cons: - Amenities are lacking; I booked this because “continental breakfast” is listed, hoping to not have to pay for food multiple times a day. I was able to get a muffin and some not great coffee. I opted to go to Streetcar cafe instead. - They’re remodeling their gym too. They do provide complimentary membership to somewhere nearby, but I didn’t try it - The rooms are decent size, it would have been nice to have a mini fridge and microwave, and maybe a small table. Plenty of space for all of them. - Other in conveniences we had were the shower drain wouldn’t stay open so we had to rig it. - Had to request additional towels and toilet paper; cleaner came every day around 4 when we were getting ready to go to dinner. I don’t know when hotels stopped changing sheets and vacuuming, but they don’t do it here. They make the bed and take towels. - The Chromecast on our TV was missing so we couldn’t stream anything, and it didn’t allow us to cast from our phones. - Only one elevator was operational, but luckily there wasn’t a long wait. - Although it’s nothing the hotel can help, there is a lot of homeless and drug use openly on the sidewalks all around the hotel and beyond. Something to be aware of, but seems to be a huge problem in NOLA. I didn’t expect it to that level.
