Rapid City, South Dakota: Family-Friendly Town near Mount Rushmore

In South Dakota’s Black Hills, views of the rugged landscape stretch for miles and miles, obstructed only by towering pine forests and the faces of four US presidents carved into the façade of Mount Rushmore. Rapid City is just a half hour from the iconic site, close enough for vacationers to take an easy day trip to go hiking through the forest or whitewater rafting on Rapid Creek. In town, you can unwind with a craft beer and catch live local music at one of Rapid City’s independently owned brewpubs. Keep an eye out for US presidents—there are 42 statues of them scattered throughout town.

Rapid City is the most convenient home base for visits to Badlands National Park, where you can hike amid prairies and geologic formations and spot bison, bighorn sheep, and other wildlife. For a different kind of day trip, make the 50-minute drive to Wall Drug, a kitschy shopping mall and slice of Americana that attracts some two million visitors each year.

Good Mainstay is a nice place to stay, clean and comfortable. I would highly recommend getting MUCH better lighting in the bathroom. I had to use the flashlight on my phone to be able to see ok to apply my makeup. We have stayed here before but don't remember the lighting being so poor. Alway before we have been a double queen suite & this time a king. Not sure why it would be different but seemed it was. We will stay again and recommend to others.

Great hotel. Have stayed a few times and will continue to stay there when I go to rapid. Great hotel and staff. Very clean and quiet. Pool was still a little cool and the pool room was a bit cool. But everything else was great!!! We have stayed there a couple of times and it has been great.

Never Again My vehicle was one of three that was broken into during the night of Sept, 29. We were headed to Wyoming on a hunting trip. We suffered significant financial losses of guns and other personal items. Hotel Staff had an "oh well" attitude, and we never received an apology for the incident. No security, no security cameras, no liability on their part. We were informed that we park at our own risk with zero liability on their part. Comforting to know. Not even a sign informing their customers that you park at your own risk. I have been very loyal to this hotel chain in the past - but I will never again stay with them. At a minimum you would think they would care enough to at least have security cameras on their park lots. Place is a joke,
