Houston, Texas: Space History and Museums in Nation’s Fourth-Largest City

As the nation’s fourth-largest city by population, Houston has established itself as one of the Gulf Coast’s most thriving cultural hubs. The city's museum district has 19 museums covering everything from history to art to science. For art lovers, the Menil Collection—which Frommer’s calls “one of the great private collections of the world”—is a must-see. Here, you’ll browse an array of 20th-century art from Jasper Johns, René Magritte, and Andy Warhol, as well as artifacts from Africa and the Pacific Islands.

You could also spend an entire day exploring Houston’s science institutions. When Apollo 13 astronaut Jim Lovell famously stated, “Houston, we have a problem,” he was talking to mission control at Space Center Houston. Here, visitors can tour the historic mission-control room and get a behind-the-scenes look at astronauts training for the International Space Station. Along Houston’s Hermann Park, The Health Museum exhibits a large-scale human body that you can enter to learn about how your organs operate.

Meg at customer relations saved me Enjoyed our stay, beautiful room and balcony. Most of all the start of the visit was overwhelming because I booked the wrong date. Meg did the best and took care of everything. Making the begining of the visit what I thought was going to be a disaster the best. I cannot give enough compliments about the place. We will be back _

Okay experience!!! Won’t be back! This was suppose to be a nice family trip but overall it was an okay experience. Let’s start with the first day. When we first got there we checked in. They gave us our keys but said we had to wait until the rooms were cleaned. We understood since we got there at 3:30 and check-in wasn’t until 4:00 however we waited until 4:55 to receive the text. Once we got back to the front desk we had to wait in line again. We waited over 30 minutes to get our room number and keys activated. This was a little annoying since we had already checked in. The room was not bad, the size was pretty big and the view was nice. The beds were comfortable. The only complaint about the room is that the shower head was pretty dirty and the balcony could have been cleaner. There was a lot of dirt on chairs and spider webs outside but that wasn’t a big deal. No one answered the phone when I called the front desk. We called to get room service but the phone rang forever with no answer. I hung up and didn’t bother. That wasn’t a big deal. Overall the first night was great. We went to LandShark for dinner. The server was awesome but it did take over 5 mins for the server to come to our table to take our app & drink order. The restaurant wasn’t even busy so I’m not sure why it took so long for someone to come to our table. The food was pretty good and the lake view was nice! The second day was not as great. I sat in the toddler area while my children played and I ordered a salad, chicken tenders and 3 cups of water. Once the server brought me the food/water and ticket (she stood there while I signed) she never came back to check on us to make sure we were okay, however she attended to the two Caucasian ladies 3 chairs down from me. She had to pass me to get to them. She went to them 4 times to ask “is everything okay” all 4 times she passed me to get to them she didn’t say anything to me nor asked if I was okay or check to see if I needed anything. The only time she interacted with me was to get my order the first time and when she brought us the food/drinks along with the check to sign. After she passed by me the 5th time I had to stop her and ask if I could get another water. She brought it but didn’t say anything to me once she handed it to me. She was not nice or friendly to me or my family at all. She really rubbed me the wrong way. I’ve worked in the food service industry over 10 years as a restaurant server and a bartender and I’ve never treated anyone that way, especially after tipping quite well and being friendly. I’ve never experienced someone catering to another guest so much that they can’t even acknowledge another paying customer. I also noticed that after I was given my check to sign the server just handed it to me without saying anything. No thank you or anything but when she checked out the same Caucasian ladies 3 chairs down she was so friendly and thanked them. She also told them more about the resort and activities. It was actually hilarious to watch. How she could be so cold towards one type of guest but not another. If you’re gonna be a server the least you can do is treat everyone the same and not show any type of discrimination. There was no reason to pass me and my family up 4 times and cater to a certain type of guest like we were not even there. Another staff member that rubbed me the wrong way the hostess at the license to chill restaurant. She wasn’t friendly at all and she looked angry when we came to get sat. I’m not sure why we got that type of treatment but after the treatment from the server at lone palms that day I can take a wild guess! Later that day we went to the arcade. It was small and tiny and there were about 5 machines that wasn’t working. It wasn’t a big deal the kids still enjoyed it. We also went to the boat rental area but it was almost time for the last sunset cruise of the day. The lady working there was rushing since it was the last cruise rental of the day. I had a couple of questions about the kayaks she answered my questions however she was in a rush since it was the last cruise for the night. We went again the next day after checking out since we made it too late to rent the day prior. The guy that helped us with the kayaks was awesome! Very cool guy! Overall the trip was okay, besides the treatment from those two staff members. It’s bothersome that we had this experience because my family and I have been to plenty of resorts in and outside of the country and we have never experienced this type of treatment. We are always nice and friendly to EVERYONE no matter what so I’m not sure why we didn’t get the same treatment from all staff. It was only the staff it wasn’t the guest! My family and I wanted to extend our stay a little longer but after the treatment we received from staff members we decided not to. We will definitely NEVER be back, at least not to this location and I will not recommend my family or friends here! They should train their staff on how to treat everyone equally!
