I love it here and think you will too. I come to this place every other year and they accommodate me and my dogs perfectly. I think the price is fair, but I am looking forward to when they reopen the restaurant. Enjoy it!

Hotel at a Glance: Mendocino Hotel & Garden Suites

A few things have changed since the Mendocino Hotel & Garden Suites opened for business in 1878. For example, the surrounding community has transformed from logging town to artists' colony. But there's at least one thing that remains unchanged: the sunsets around here. The hotel sits on a bluff overlooking the ocean and is within walking distance of Mendocino Headlands State Park, which has served as a vantage point for 50,000 vacation-worthy sunsets since the hotel welcomed its first guests.

  • Enjoy complimentary coffee or tea all day at the lobby bar.
  • Spend the night in luxurious rooms; the luxury garden room features an Italian marble bathroom and down comforter. Some rooms have small porches. Victorian rooms boast antique furnishings, lace curtains, and blackout drapes.
  • Put your feet up and stay in for indoor amenities like cable TV, high-speed WiFi, and a selection of newspapers.
  • Go hiking on the coastal cliffs of Mendocino Headlands State Park, just a mile away.

Mendocino, California: New England Look-Alike on Scenic Pacific Headlands

In the mid-19th century, Mendocino rose to prominence as a redwood-logging hub along California's northern coast, attracting a number of lumberjacks from New England. These West Coast pioneers brought East Coast architecture with them, building their new homes in the Victorian and saltbox styles. The town has such a New England look that it stood in for a Maine fishing village during the filming of the TV series Murder, She Wrote. For a peek at some of these picturesque old buildings, head to the Ford House, which serves as the official Visitor Information Center of Mendocino Village, and the Kelley House Museum, which preserves 19th-century photographs and furniture in a house built in 1861.

In the 1950s, when it was in danger of becoming a ghost town, Mendocino was thrust back into the spotlight thanks to painter Bill Zacha’s Mendocino Art Center. Still open today, the art center has taken advantage of its scenic setting along the town’s coastline, which has been the inspiration for several watercolor and oil canvases. A quick stroll south will bring you to one such scenic spot, Mendocino Headlands State Park, where waves crash along carving arches, grottoes, and stony bluffs.

Back in time I have been visiting Mendocino for decades. The one thing I needed to get off my bucket list was to stay at the Mendocino Hotel. I frequently would take time to sit in the Victorian style lobby to go back in time. Why stay at the Mendocino Hotel? If you want to absorb the historical aspect of the area one cannot select a better establishment. I always recommend calling the day before. I like to call at the time I intend to check in and get the name of the desk clerk who is helping me. This is the best time to make or change any detail about your itinerary. In my case it was adding my step mother to the room. The advantage here is that when you check in you are already in a first name basis with the person in front. Dropping names is important in small communities. Your front desk person is your best asset! Do not treat them like "the help". Considering the fact that it was Thanksgiving weekend and the place was fully booked I found the room very affordable and quiet. For a hotel built in the 1800's it was in fairly good shape, relatively clean and comfortable. Due to new ownership the restaurant and bar are not open at this time.

New ownership, not ready for guests This hotel is under new ownership. We had happy memories of good meals in the restaurant and fine drinks in the beautiful bar with the carved wood and the stained glass above _ I made a reservation for a fine room with an ocean view, special for my wife's birthday. The bar was closed indefinitely, and the restaurant too. There was no cable tv, but a notification that the cable guy would be coming the next Friday. There was no housekeeping during our stay, but the room would be cleaned after we left... It's an old place with no elevator, and there was nobody to help with our bags, but we were only going to the second floor. Nevertheless, I asked to see the room before unloading the car. Good thing! There was no heat, and it was a chilly 42-degree night. _ I thought about a space heater, but it was way too late to salvage this stay. The woman at the front desk was understanding, and she was able to get us a room on the other side of town at the Hill House, which was quite nice. I hope the famed Mendocino Hotel gets its act together for next summer, but it's not fit to stay at now.
