Manhattan's Financial District: Wall Street, Skyscrapers, and the 9/11 Memorial

Once the sole province of day traders and bankers working frenetic jobs at the New York Stock Exchange and on Wall Street, the Financial District has attracted its fair share of full-time residents in recent years. Today, more than 56,000 people live in the neighborhood, which borders The Battery on the southern tip of Manhattan.

The population boom has helped expose the neighborhood’s occasionally overlooked cultural attractions. At the eastern edge of Fulton Street, the revitalized South Street Seaport historic district is home to some of the oldest architecture in downtown Manhattan as well as a fleet of renovated sailing ships and an up-close view of the Brooklyn Bridge. The district is also home to the towering One World Trade Center, which is now the tallest building in the Western Hemisphere. Right next door, a memorial to the nearly 3,000 people who lost their lives in the September 11th attacks is now open for visits, along with a museum.

Not a good start… Arrived after a long day of traveling at 3:20 for a 3:00 check in as stated on my booking confirmation to be told that check in is 4:00 and to come back then. Returned at 4:05 and joined a very long queue to check in, got to the front and was informed they had my booking but there wasn’t any available rooms - lady went into a side room and came out over 5 mins later to say they had found one. Credit card handed over and check in completed then we made our way to the room to find the cleaner cleaning it as it wasn’t ready. After about 10 mins we eventually got into the room which was still covered in dust in several places. Cups and coffee/tea hadn’t been refilled from previous guests so had to ring reception to get them. No receipt given on check in to see why they had charged my card over £450. I went to reception to query this and was told it was a €600 holding fee plus the tourist tax, this included free phone calls and other things which I didn’t need so I was given a late check out until 1pm. Arrived back at the hotel to freshen up before checking out to find the cleaning staff in and no water. On checking out, I received an itemised bill which had goods charged from the pop up cafe that should have been included. I had to go back to reception to ask for a refund. When booking the hotel, it was advertised as having a bar and restaurant , as it is undergoing refurbishment these weren’t open. There was no communication to tell me they weren’t available. The hotel is in a good area near to the subway stations and over the way from 9/11 museum and we did enjoy our time there after the rocky start. Our room was a good size with a nice view and large comfortable bed.

Beauty Property The ambiance of this establishment is beauty and worthy of experiencing. The staff was helpful with early check in and gave me water while I waited. The elevators could be a little better but it’s being remodeled. The views are captivating and the lighting is so soft and beautiful.
