Times Square, Manhattan: Flashy Neon Lights and World-Class Culture

Times Square is at the intersection of Broadway and Seventh Avenue in Midtown Manhattan. The famous address—affectionately known as “the Crossroads of the World”—is home to hypnotizing billboards, giant wraparound news tickers, and the neon lights of Broadway. Beyond the glitz and gimmicks, there are a number of cultural offerings in the area, ranging from museums to Michelin-rated restaurants. Buildings of historical and architectural interest include the Paramount Building and One Times Square, site of the annual New Year's Eve ball drop.

Nearby, the Museum of Modern Art houses a trove of masterpieces including Vincent van Gogh's The Starry Night, Claude Monet's Water Lilies paintings, and Andy Warhol's Campbell's Soup Cans. Save time for a stroll through the museum's outdoor sculpture garden, where installations are clustered around sparkling reflecting pools. About a mile north of Times Square, the David H. Koch Theater is home to one of the world’s foremost dance companies—the New York City Ballet, which stages contemporary works as well as classics like Swan Lake and The Nutcracker.

I was pleasantly surprised. Very clean room and friendly staff. The bed was very hard, pillows and duvet felt really clean, the room was a nice size. They didn’t have a mini fridge or a microwave. There is a little store across the street and that was super convenient, the elevator it’s crazy fast. The location it’s excellent and we had an amazing view. I would definitely come back!

Great location - In need of some TLC Check-in was quick and efficient, which was a good start to the stay. However, the $100 per night safety deposit felt excessive. I’ve stayed in other 4-star hotels just metres away from this one where the nightly deposit was half that amount. At the time of writing, I’m still waiting for the deposit to be returned to my credit card. We stayed above the 40th floor with a "city view". The room itself was a good size, but unfortunately it felt a bit grubby and in need of a refresh. There were marked/ grubby door frames and skirting boards in the room, the armchair had ripped upholstery and the shower nozzle had detached from the wall. It was also noticeabley dusty in the light pannelling above sink and the skirtings. Some areas of the hotel also seemed poorly maintained — one elevator was missing its handrails and in another the button panel was loose. Overall, the property could definitely use a bit of TLC in places. One inconvenience was the lack of a fridge in the room, which would have been very useful during the 5 night stay. There was, however, an ice machine available which helped somewhat. During our stay the fire alarm in the room also began beeping loudly, which meant we had to call maintenance. Thankfully it was rectified within the hour by a lovely gentleman, as the children would not have been able to sleep with the constant beeping. On the positive side, the beds were clean and very comfortable. Daily housekeeping was excellent — bins were emptied, fresh water was provided, beds were made, and clean towels were supplied each day. The housekeeping lady did a great job keeping things tidy. Most of the staff were very pleasant. Security and several reception staff members were particularly friendly and helpful, which made a good impression. The location is definitely the hotel’s strong point. It’s within easy walking distance of multiple subway lines, Central Park, Bryant Park, Fifth Avenue, Rockefeller Center, and many other attractions, making it a very convenient base for exploring the city. Its surprising is that the hotel is listed as a 4-star property on the website i used to book, yet there is no restaurant or bar of any kind on site. There is a small shop in the hotel lobby, but items such as drinks were priced far above what you would pay at Walgreens just outside the 45th Street entrance. Overall, while the location and staff are strong positives, the hotel would benefit from some refurbishment, more complete facilities, and a more reasonable deposit policy.

Nasty The only good thing about this hotel is the location. We stayed one night here, pretty much only came in twice to drop stuff off and to sleep. The shower did not look clean at all. We woke up at 530a so we can get ready to leave and when we went into the bathroom there was water all in front of the toilet and black stuff (not sure if it’s mold) all in the sink. We are assuming the sewer came out the sink and around the toilet at some point. Neither one of us got up in the middle of the night so we have no idea what happened. When we checked out I told the front desk about it and her response was “I will make note of it so we don’t charge you”…TF??? Why would you charge someone for the sewer back out the drains in the middle of the night???? She seemed annoyed that I even told her about it. I definitely won’t be returning to this hotel. I would give zero starts if possible.
