Monterey, CA: The Cradle of California's Maritime Legacy

Monterey, California, is a coastal gem steeped in maritime history and natural beauty, where the Pacific Ocean meets centuries of cultural heritage. Once the capital of Alta California under Spanish and Mexican rule, the city holds a pivotal place in the state’s historical narrative. Monterey Bay, with its deep blue waters, has long been the lifeblood of the area, attracting fishermen, explorers, and marine life alike. Visitors to this iconic destination can experience landmarks like Cannery Row, immortalized by John Steinbeck, and the Monterey Bay Aquarium, a world-renowned marine sanctuary that echoes the region’s deep connection to the sea.

The city’s historic district reflects Monterey’s layered past, with adobe buildings from the 18th and 19th centuries standing as testaments to its early colonial roots. Today, Monterey thrives as a haven for both cultural and natural exploration. Scenic drives along the rugged coastline of the famed 17-Mile Drive, whale-watching expeditions, and visits to the rich tidal ecosystems of Point Lobos offer a captivating experience. Monterey is not just a place of beauty; it’s a living narrative of California’s evolution, bridging the past with the present in every tide that touches its shores.

Great visit with family A great place to stay! The view is absolutely stunning, and the staff are incredibly friendly and helpful. The swimming pool is lovely, and they’re currently building a sauna and an ice bucket shower, which is exciting. Don’t miss the restaurant on the third floor—it’s definitely worth a try. The food was delicious!

Great family hotel near the beach, but there's room for improvement. The hotel has a great location on the beach. If you're traveling with a family and you want to spend time on the beach, this is a great pick. The hotel is a converted motel and the motel bones certainly show through. The rooms are small and there's not a lot of space for spreading out in the room. I think it's a missed opportunity that they haven't replaced all the railings on the ocean view side of the building with glass instead of the old wood railings. The tidewater restaurant didn't have any visible staff when we were visiting. I would expect to see waiters walking around serving food and cocktails on a busy Saturday night. The hotel was almost fully booked while we were there. The lobby restaurant and bar were very lively and vibrant at sunset, with a large group watching the sun go down and others in the bar watching the basketball game. We had breakfast at the Lantern Room restaurant for Mother's Day and they couldn't find our reservation for some reason. It seemed like they are still working out the kinks in whatever system they have adopted. The hotel also charges a resort fee, even though those are illegal in California, and parking is $50/night, which seems ridiculous. Overall, I will stay here again next time I come down to Monterey, but I think there is ample room for improvement.

Fave breakfast spot We are locals and we love coming here for breakfast, they have the best Benedict in the county. The coffee drinks are really good too. And plenty of times we have been lucky enough to see dolphins and other sea life while we enjoyed our meal. Tori was our waitress this time and she was excellent, she even let us know there's a locals discount. We will definitely be back.
