Monterey, CA: The Cradle of California's Maritime Legacy

Monterey, California, is a coastal gem steeped in maritime history and natural beauty, where the Pacific Ocean meets centuries of cultural heritage. Once the capital of Alta California under Spanish and Mexican rule, the city holds a pivotal place in the state’s historical narrative. Monterey Bay, with its deep blue waters, has long been the lifeblood of the area, attracting fishermen, explorers, and marine life alike. Visitors to this iconic destination can experience landmarks like Cannery Row, immortalized by John Steinbeck, and the Monterey Bay Aquarium, a world-renowned marine sanctuary that echoes the region’s deep connection to the sea.

The city’s historic district reflects Monterey’s layered past, with adobe buildings from the 18th and 19th centuries standing as testaments to its early colonial roots. Today, Monterey thrives as a haven for both cultural and natural exploration. Scenic drives along the rugged coastline of the famed 17-Mile Drive, whale-watching expeditions, and visits to the rich tidal ecosystems of Point Lobos offer a captivating experience. Monterey is not just a place of beauty; it’s a living narrative of California’s evolution, bridging the past with the present in every tide that touches its shores.

Great beachfront property They have luggage carts but won’t let you use them - it’s policy that only bell hops can use them. We are used to managing our own bags, so we didn’t appreciate finding out about this upon arrival and it got the stay off to a bad start. Great beach access. Smores kits are included with your daily resort fee. Lantern Room restaurant is very good. Love the location. Kids had a very fun time. Would stay here again for sure.

No Better Place in the Area! What could have been a complete downer was converted into a FABULOUS stay! First and foremost, there is NO better beach hotel in the area! We have investigated! Waking up to a barefoot beach walk, coffee in hand, at this hotel is PRICELESS! The remodel is lovely, and the views are astounding as always! Loved seeing the whales, sea otters, and the harbor seals - all from the comfort of the ginormous lobby windows! My most recent visit was for a Girl's Weekend, and we sadly arrived to a room that had to be placed out of commission - no ocean view room for us, after all. Once we got over the initial extreme disappointment, we were able to GREATLY appreciate all the hotel and staff offered to make our stay glorious nonetheless! We suspect that they are understaffed at the moment. (Could it be that people are afraid to come to work due to ICE? So horribly sad!) And the staff who were there working (less the bellman) were extraordinary! Alex at the front desk was helpful, patient, and feverishly working to ensure everyone felt cared for. Rebecca is a wonderful addition to the hotel front desk! She is sweet, remembers your face and your name, and ensures you feel special! Bastian "Boss Man" ensured we had our drinks and were fed, with personalized service. Khalil was on point with the wine! And Vivian's familiar face at the front desk is always appreciated! The s'mores are always a nice touch! Way to go, Monterey Beach Hotel Staff, to turn it around and make our Girl's Weekend unforgettably glorious! THANK YOU!!!!

Motel vibe The place gave us a cheap motel vibe. Location on the beach is all you get. We booked 2 rooms for a family of 4 and one of our rooms was upgraded to ocean front. We arrived late on Sunday night on May 31 and it was freezing cold and super windy. I imagined nice long walk on the beach, forget all of that. We got into our cold rooms and all we wanted was a working heater. In one of our rooms a wall controller for the heater did not work, and it took them more than an hour to send somebody to fix it. No robes or slippers. Outside set up was nice with sofas and little fireplaces, but again, the wind was so strong, no chance you could sit outside comfortably. There were heaters outside but they did not work. Rooms are very basic, bathroom is super tiny. You can barely open the door, it practically takes all available space. We thought we would enjoy our morning, but no luck. On Monday morning before 9 am workers started fixing patio floors right outside our rooms. It was super noisy even when we had breakfast on the top floor. Upon checkout I was given incorrect folio with charges, parking charged to both rooms (we had one car). Upon checkin we were given welcome drink cards and we did not have a chance to use them, so upon check out I asked if they could waive a bottle of water that my child grabbed in the room instead of the drink. I was told that housekeeping is separate from front desk and they could not do that (?). After the fact they charged me for 2 bottles ($18) instead of 1. Also the lady at the check out kept telling me how she could not confirm my charges because she was not the one who checked me in. Ok. Cold room, morning noise and inability to confirm charges upon departure. Not the type of experience you want for $500+ a night.
