Monterey, CA: The Cradle of California's Maritime Legacy

Monterey, California, is a coastal gem steeped in maritime history and natural beauty, where the Pacific Ocean meets centuries of cultural heritage. Once the capital of Alta California under Spanish and Mexican rule, the city holds a pivotal place in the state’s historical narrative. Monterey Bay, with its deep blue waters, has long been the lifeblood of the area, attracting fishermen, explorers, and marine life alike. Visitors to this iconic destination can experience landmarks like Cannery Row, immortalized by John Steinbeck, and the Monterey Bay Aquarium, a world-renowned marine sanctuary that echoes the region’s deep connection to the sea.

The city’s historic district reflects Monterey’s layered past, with adobe buildings from the 18th and 19th centuries standing as testaments to its early colonial roots. Today, Monterey thrives as a haven for both cultural and natural exploration. Scenic drives along the rugged coastline of the famed 17-Mile Drive, whale-watching expeditions, and visits to the rich tidal ecosystems of Point Lobos offer a captivating experience. Monterey is not just a place of beauty; it’s a living narrative of California’s evolution, bridging the past with the present in every tide that touches its shores.

Underwhelming The location is right on the beach which is nice. However, the rooms are tiny and the ocean front room is claustrophobic because you cannot open your blinds or everyone walking by can see in. It’s an old motel 6 style with outdoor hallways and no private balcony. Our room was by the elevator and we heard them all night as well as the noisy AC. The room had scrapes all over the white walls- most likely because it’s impossible to move around in the room and find space for your suitcases and things. They charge $16 for a mocktail at the bar and the female bartender is super rude! When I asked for a sparkling water she made a face. The restaurant didn’t have multiple items advertised- no prickly pear syrup to make a drink that’s on the menu. No tomatoes and watermelon salad. The views from the restaurant are nice and we enjoyed hanging out in the lobby with the ocean views. Walking on the beach is nice but there were 5-6 dead and rotting seals on the beach- most likely from leptospirosis. Seems like that is a public health hazard and it was gross. This was our last PCH stop from Seattle to Monterey and we stayed at some amazing places along the way which could have tainted my view.

Beautiful ocean view room... Located right on the ocean really nice to hear the waves crashing 24/7. We saw dolphins swimming. Exquisite sunset...Front desk helpful + talented. One nice young lady helped us rent 2 ebikes (very complex process that took 30 mins). This property could be elite...UNDER-STAFFED in housekeeping-restaurant + hospitality. We waited until 5pm to have our room cleaned (despite 3 requests); we waited 25 mins to be seated for breakfast despite multiple open tables; and we carried our own luggage to our room...All staff hard working + professional. Management simply elects to under-staff this property. Too bad. It could/should be elite...

Bartender not Nice If I could give this place no stars I would . Im a local and come here all the time the food is okay . But what really made me feel un wanted was the customer service . The bartender Erica so sweet and nice and knows her stuff . But the short bartender that was with her with the hair from the 80s . She was really rude I asked for a water and she never got me a water she went to look for Erica to get me water . Please tell her to button up her shirt it’s not attractive to see her breast . She needs to be more nice and welcoming.
