Monterey, CA: The Cradle of California's Maritime Legacy

Monterey, California, is a coastal gem steeped in maritime history and natural beauty, where the Pacific Ocean meets centuries of cultural heritage. Once the capital of Alta California under Spanish and Mexican rule, the city holds a pivotal place in the state’s historical narrative. Monterey Bay, with its deep blue waters, has long been the lifeblood of the area, attracting fishermen, explorers, and marine life alike. Visitors to this iconic destination can experience landmarks like Cannery Row, immortalized by John Steinbeck, and the Monterey Bay Aquarium, a world-renowned marine sanctuary that echoes the region’s deep connection to the sea.

The city’s historic district reflects Monterey’s layered past, with adobe buildings from the 18th and 19th centuries standing as testaments to its early colonial roots. Today, Monterey thrives as a haven for both cultural and natural exploration. Scenic drives along the rugged coastline of the famed 17-Mile Drive, whale-watching expeditions, and visits to the rich tidal ecosystems of Point Lobos offer a captivating experience. Monterey is not just a place of beauty; it’s a living narrative of California’s evolution, bridging the past with the present in every tide that touches its shores.

A horror place! do read the Trustpilot and google maps reviews! A horror experience. Dirty room, no ocean view (even though we paid extra for that). Awful and less than competent customer service. We left immediately and they promised us to return the $2000, but haven't done so. D Farrell specifically, now they ignore our emails, and it is impossible to call them. We will be reporting them to the trading authorities. They ruined our engagement.

New restaurant overlooked by locals(till now) is a winner! My wife and I have lived in the Monterey area for about 6yrs.we look for great places to eat with great views and atmosphere. I work in hospitality, wine tasting, and have read and eaten at many places here that I happily recommend to visitors, and have added The Lantern Room to the list. We’ve driven by so many times and never thought to stop. What a surprise! Attractive lobby and bar taking full advantage of the view, easy ADA access for my MIL, all seats in the restaurant have the same view and more from the 4th floor. We’ve been 4x with friends and family for a late weekend breakfast and haven’t been disappointed with the experience. We’ve are excited to have dinner soon!

Disappointing. Really disappointing visit. The beach view room with full length windows was directly located on the communal walkway meaning blinds had to be shut constantly for privacy rendering the beach view pointless. There was no room service only high end dining or bar snacks and given the location was some distance from Monterey itself, dining options were severely limited. The bathroom was tiny, so small that the basin was located in the bedroom itself! Room very draughty and not insulated, clothes in suitcase damp in the morning. This is a motel dressed up as a hotel.
