Monterey, CA: The Cradle of California's Maritime Legacy

Monterey, California, is a coastal gem steeped in maritime history and natural beauty, where the Pacific Ocean meets centuries of cultural heritage. Once the capital of Alta California under Spanish and Mexican rule, the city holds a pivotal place in the state’s historical narrative. Monterey Bay, with its deep blue waters, has long been the lifeblood of the area, attracting fishermen, explorers, and marine life alike. Visitors to this iconic destination can experience landmarks like Cannery Row, immortalized by John Steinbeck, and the Monterey Bay Aquarium, a world-renowned marine sanctuary that echoes the region’s deep connection to the sea.

The city’s historic district reflects Monterey’s layered past, with adobe buildings from the 18th and 19th centuries standing as testaments to its early colonial roots. Today, Monterey thrives as a haven for both cultural and natural exploration. Scenic drives along the rugged coastline of the famed 17-Mile Drive, whale-watching expeditions, and visits to the rich tidal ecosystems of Point Lobos offer a captivating experience. Monterey is not just a place of beauty; it’s a living narrative of California’s evolution, bridging the past with the present in every tide that touches its shores.

Not worth the price they have posted Normally I love staying here. This was my first time since the renovations and new ownership. Nice room upgrades, however they do not offer coffee which was a lie they said in the brochure. The coffee they do offer is in the restaurant for $6 for a small cup. Some of the most disgusting coffee I have ever tasted. The fire pit in front of our room didn't work. They no longer have cornhole, replaced with saunas that were unusable. Nice place to stay but definitely no longer worth the price.

Glorified motel! I’m only giving one star because of how insanely overpriced this place is and how misleading the website photos are. It is motel that was haphazardly converted into a “hotel”. The rooms are all accessed from outside, like a motel. The “ocean view” rooms, which look like they have a balcony, only have one window that overlooks the ocean AND the motel outdoor hallway. You can enjoy the ocean view while having passersby look in on your room. The rooms themselves are tiny for the price with minimal storage. Hooks were falling off the wall. Our bathroom shower didn’t drain, shower pressure was terrible. The windows don’t open. The showers to rinse off after leaving the beach were turned off, so we had to track sand all over our room. There were very few garbage cans available on the property, especially for a pet friendly hotel. I travel a lot, hotels, airbnbs, and this place is the worst experience I’ve had for the money. EVER. The bright spots were the ocean front location and the on-site restaurant. Please save your money and sanity and stay elsewhere.

Very dissappointing My ocean view room was downgraded to what they call a garden view. It is actually a view of the parking lot and a highway, photo attached. Not possible to get any rest in here - highway noise, blackout shade doesn't work, and porch light shines right onto the bed. If you are lucky enough to fall asleep under these conditions but unlucky enough to need to use the bathroom, motion detection light in there will jolt you right out of your sleep mode. All of this costs some major $$$, and parking is $50/night.
