Monterey, California: Scenic Beaches and Marine Wildlife on the Pacific Coast

The city of Monterey is at Monterey Bay’s southern end, in an area considered one of the world’s most scenic thanks to its rugged cliffs and dramatic ocean views. Author John Steinbeck lived for several years in the neighboring town of Pacific Grove, and he immortalized this part of central California in works such as East of Eden and Of Mice and Men. In Cannery Row, Steinbeck depicted the Monterey fish-canning industry at the turn of the 20th century. Today, a tourist destination of the same name houses souvenir shops and eateries right where the sardine factories used to be.

Among the city’s must-see attractions is the Monterey Bay Aquarium. Its mesmerizing displays include a living kelp forest filled with leopard sharks and wolf eels. For those who want to get closer to the sea, there’s the oceanfront Monterey Bay Coastal Recreation Trail, where sea lions sunbathe on the rocks and otters play in the surf. A variety of whales pass by the shores of Monterey all year; visitors might also spot a few dolphins from aboard one of the popular harbor cruises.

Great location and beautiful lobby. Hotel staff is very welcoming. You are definitely staying here for the views and beach access - it was 40 steps from our room to the sand. Lots of outside patio seating, but fire tables don’t work (no propane tanks) which was disappointing. Rooms, however, need some updating - not at all on par with the cute and trendy lobby. Carpet (hardwood flooring would work better with the sand issue) and paint is dark which makes room feel very creepy at night when you roll down the privacy screen on the window. Bathroom is SMALL (like my 11 year old struggled getting in the door and shutting it behind her) and lots of water damage issues in the bathroom and room. Even though I loved the location, view and cute lobby, overall I would not stay here again due to the poor quality of the room.

The rooms need cosmetic upkeeping. Not very clean. The shower is badly designed. You can bareley get out of it. The walls are paper thin. You can hear EVERYTHING the neighbors are doing. The location is great, the lobby and restaurant are beautiful. I wish the rooms were as nice.

Views and staff were amazing! Breakfast upstairs was great! Rooms felt low budget (the shower head sprayed out), yet the view made up for everything! We had a great time there!

The location was great. Right off of the freeway, and right on the beach. The bar and restaurant had good variety, even for happy hour. The views while eating are the best. If you’re wanting to sleep early, don’t get a room next to where they play giant jenga and corn hole…it gets surprisingly wild. My only negative is the carpet, it needs replacing. It’s like walking in asphalt. Yikes!
