Hotel at Glance: Mountain Edge Resort & Spa

Mountain Edge Resort & Spa’s timber and fieldstone exterior echoes the woods and mountains of its New Hampshire surroundings. This rustic theme continues inside, where granite, fur, and fieldstone define furnishings crafted by local artisans. While guests can spend their days canoeing and hiking, they’ll hardly be roughing it with amenities such as a full-service spa and indoor sauna.

  • When you’re hungry: Chefs at The Mountain Spirits Tavern cook an array of seasonal meals, from meatloaf and prime rib to shrimp gumbo and sweet and sour chicken.
  • Watch the sunset from the tavern’s back deck.
  • Saltwater pools: Swim here and it’ll feel like you’re in the ocean—it’s also easier on the hair, skin, and eyes.
  • Indulge yourself at the onsite spa, which offers everything from facials and mud wraps to massages and mani-pedis.
  • Area attractions include The Fort at No. 4, an open-air museum with historical re-enactments, as well as Mount Sunapee’s Adventure Park, which offers activities such as a canopy zipline tour, a bike park with trails and bike rentals, mini golf, and disc golf.

Newbury, New Hampshire: Quiet Hamlet Amid Mountains and Lakes

Rolling hills and thickets of untouched forest mark the landscape around Newbury, a tiny town about an hour north of Manchester. The centerpiece of the area is arguably Mount Sunapee, one of the tallest peaks in the state. Hiking trails crisscross the terrain at Mount Sunapee State Park, leading to a picturesque lakefront popular for kayaking and fishing. In winter, you can hit the slopes at Mount Sunapee Resort, which features 11 lifts and dozens of trails good for both beginning and advanced skiers.

The Fells Historic Estate & Gardens once served as a summer retreat for John Milton Hay, the secretary of state and chief party planner under Presidents McKinley and Roosevelt. It spans 84 acres of manicured grounds and woodland trails on the other side of Lake Sunapee. Sign up for a guided walking tour of the 22-room Colonial Revival home, or stop in for one of its featured exhibits, such as an open-air painting demonstration.

Very nice place to stay. It's close to the mountain and the lake. The rooms are very spacious and include a kitchenette. We typically go in the late summer. This place has an outdoor pool and two indoor pools, as well as a couple of warm whirlpools. Parking is also free.

Outstanding experience - lodging, food and events We stayed several nights and hosted events for my daughter's wedding here. The staff is exceptionally helpful and accommodating. We loved the spacious rooms; it feels like you have a condo to yourself, with all the services of a hotel. Our families and friends gathered in the tavern for a welcome party and day-after breakfast. It's a perfect, relaxed atmosphere and the food was delicious. Justin took such good care of us and all our guests! We could not have had a better experience! Being able to have pets is a huge plus, too.

Lovely Summer Visit to the Lake Sunapee Area We had a wonderful four-day getaway to the Lake Sunapee region. The Mountain Edge Resort is comfortable, spacious, and conveniently located in this scenic area. It is nestled at the base of Mount Sunapee and is just a short distance from the NH State beach, which is spacious, clean, and family-friendly. There are lots of cute towns and harbors nearby, including Sunapee Harbor, Newbury, and New London - each one is more charming than the others. One highlight of the trip was a lovely sunset dinner cruise on the MV Kearsage. Another highlight was simply relaxing by the pools and the hot tub at the Mountain Edge Resort. Everything was impeccably maintained and the staff was so welcoming. We will definitely return to this all season resort soon. Hopefully, our next trip here will be for some winter skiing fun!

July 4th holiday weekend Just back from a 4 night stay at my favorite Sunapee resort. Though the weather was unusually cold and wet the friendliness, warmth, comfort, and convenience of having a fairly well equipped 1 bedroom plus den unit that sleeps 6 at lake Sunapee makes it a breeze to get on the lake with the boat and play during the day and watch the fireworks at night, and come back to a comfortable place to chill with family and friends for the night. If only Mountain Edge Resort had a dock on the lake for guest use. (Hint, Hint, Suggestion, Wish List, Dream) I am pleased to report our guests found the big bed in the den quite comfortable and a huge improvement over the original sofa bed that the den room was furnished with. It would be a nice improvement if a door could be added to the den room for some privacy, but I suspect a building or fire code prohibits it. For the first time in years we also had a guest sleeping on the sofa bed in the living room and am happy to report she told me the mattress was comfortable. The resort owner Tom, and all staff I encountered were pleasant, smiling and accommodating with extra towels, and even an extra large pot from the restaurant kitchen for large meal I prepared, not to mention the complementary late check out! If your considering staying here at Mountain Edge, go ahead and book it. I am confident you will be happy. I have been coming back since the resort first opened about 15 years ago and offered a timeshare opportunity in addition to traditional hotel stays.
