Warm Springs and Pine Mountain, Georgia: Sprawling State Park and Gardens

F.D. Roosevelt State Park—Georgia’s largest state park—unfurls across 9,000 rolling acres between the towns of Warm Springs and Pine Mountain, just 80 miles southwest of Atlanta. It’s named after the 32nd US president, who picnicked here and swam in the park’s warm springs in the 1920s to ease his polio-related aches and pains. You can tour the Little White House Historic Site, the vacation cottage where he stayed. Hike along the Pine Mountain Trail or go horseback riding via Roosevelt Stables; horse trails often wind past Lake Franklin and group camps built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s.

Just outside the park in Pine Mountain, you can bicycle through Callaway Gardens, zip line through the forest canopy, or tee off on one of its two 18-hole golf courses. Callaway Gardens also offers you a number of ways to connect with nature: watch raptors in flight during daily Birds of Prey shows, marvel at more than 1,000 butterflies flitting around the conservatory, and see seasonal plant displays in the horticultural center. Kids will enjoy Pine Mountain Wild Animal Safari Park, a drive-thru safari home to lions, tigers, monkeys, and giraffes. After a day of outdoor adventure, head to downtown Pine Mountain or Warm Springs to shop for antiques and collectibles.

On Top Of It All, Now With Fast Internet This is my third review of the Mountain Top Inn and I am happy to report that our third visit was even better than the first two. Check-in was quick - just sign and go. Staff was very nice. This time we were on the first floor of the lodge, staying in room 4 with a queen bed. Great views and a brief walk from parking. Storage has not changed. You still only have a shelf and small drawers beside your bed. Our room included a fridge and microwave. Room was clean and linens fresh. Plenty of hot water. The TV worked but everything was Amazon TV and YouTube. AT&T cellular was 2 bars, good enough for basic communications. The WiFi used to be iffy, but this time was completely different! The old HughesNet was replaced by fiber. I measured 50 Mbs up and down. On our visit in 2022 we had no WiFi in our lodge room. In November 2023, it connected but would momentarily drop every few minutes. Now it is fast enough to do just about anything. Thank you, Mountain Top Inn, for a tremendous improvement! Like I said before, come here for the magnificent views and to get away from it all. Surrounded by FDR State Park, it is minutes away from Callaway Gardens and The Little White House. And the new home for fast WiFi.

Great location, friendly staff, but management needs to up their game. Very friendly and helpful staff however, this lodge could use some improved management. Upon arrival, we were warmly greeted and given basic information at the office, which is about a mile from the actual lodge. When we returned to the lodge, the key we were provided would not open our room door. They were double glass, French doors and even though both my husband and I tried, we could not get the door to open. The deadbolt appeared to unlock, but the door was stuck. We called the office as we did not want to damage the glass doors. We were told that they knew that the doors had a problem and needed repair (really?) We were told they would send someone out. After driving 6 hours, being hungry, we were not too keen on waiting around, but someone arrived in about 10 minutes. She also could not open the door. At that point the Staff member said she would get the assistant manager, who was on site. The assistant manager then tried to open the door and also had great difficulty. Finally, she kicked at the base of the door and the door flung open. The first staff member remarked that she did not want us to have to deal with that all weekend and we agreed. She opened up another room for us so we could move our luggage in but informed us we’d have to pick up the key up from the main office (as she and the assistant manager were leaving for the day.) So, I had to get in the car, head to the office and pick up the key for the new room. The staff member at the office was very apologetic. When I politely asked if everyone knew the door was defective, why would they rent the room out? She replied that they had “already replaced the lock and that other customers had had no problem with it”. Well, all I know is that 3 of us could not get it open and the assistant manager had to about bust the door down to get it open. Not a good start to the vacation. It was my husband and my anniversary and after driving for over 6 hours, being tired and hungry, this was more than a little annoying. The room they moved us to was a nice room but inside the dusty heart-shaped Jacuzzi tub was a handwritten piece of paper that said “out of order”. We had to laugh. Outside our room were lovely log benches but not one for each room, so people that were staying in the room next to us sat right outside our window and talked into the evening. Jars with dead bugs hung all around the property which we guess were were to trap the bugs. It looked like nobody had emptied them in weeks. Rafters above us In the showers, had multiple cobwebs hanging from them. My husband‘s biggest complaint was that the beautiful view outside the lodge looking towards the mountains, became a like a lit baseball stadium at night. Huge, bright lights lit up the whole back area like a major league baseball stadium. Not sure what the reason is for such excessive lighting unless they have had security problems in the past, but thank goodness they did have blackout curtains in the rooms as the lights stayed on all night. With proper management, these issues can be easily fixed. The location to this lodge is wonderful and again, the staff was courteous and responsive to our key issue, but should’ve known better than to rent out a room that had problems in the past with the door sticking. Would probably seek lodging elsewhere next time.

Change the lock! Overall, i enjoyed my stay at the Mountain Top Inn and Resort in room #11. I had some difficulties with the top lock on my room door. Someone was sent to my room to address the issue, however, the lock was extremely hard to lock and it just needs to be replaced.… period. A real good dusting needs to be done for cobwebs located in-between the bed post and nightstand. The mattress was prefect and I slept peacefully under the sun window where I saw the moon before the sun rise. I would stay again for sure to see if those things have been improved.
