Though it’s tucked into 1,700 forested acres of New Hampshire’s gorgeous White Mountains, the AAA Four Diamond Mountain View Grand Resort & Spa still finds a way to stand out. It was originally a simple country inn built on these slopes in 1865. After many additions and a complete 21st-century renovation, the colonial-revival building is what you see today: a massive resort sprawled out like the magnificent peaks that surround it.
After a full day out in the mountains, pay a visit to the award-winning spa to decompress with a massage or immerse yourself in the 252-jet, mountain-water-filled soaking tub. There’s an eclectic selection of dining options on the property. Elegantly decorated with rows upon rows of wine racks that span the entire room, the Wine Cellar restaurant offers gourmet dishes and the perfect wines to pair with them. Alternatively, the Tavern serves up pub fare and local draft beers.
White Mountains, New Hampshire: Soaring Peaks and Quaint Towns
Located in northern New Hampshire, White Mountain National Forest has 48 peaks that rise more than 4,000 feet, making them New England’s tallest mountains. They include the 6,288-foot-high summit of Mount Washington, where climbers head to take in views that extend to Maine, Quebec, and the Atlantic Ocean. In the winter, the activity centers on skiing. The area’s well-kept trails include those at Loon Mountain, Waterville Valley, and Black Mountain. They’re all in close proximity, making it easy to ski several of them in a day. At Cannon Mountain, you’ll find 72 trails, as well as the highest ski summit and longest vertical drop in the entire state.
Small historical towns dot the surrounding lowlands. Many became popular vacation spots during the railroad era, when Bostonians and New Yorkers flocked here to exchange stifling city streets for mountain air. Whitefield preserves this history through its proud Victorian houses, and dozens of Gilded Age mansions stand just south in Bethlehem.
