Downtown Boston: Revolution-Era Landmarks and Modern Skyscrapers

Downtown Boston is home to one of the country’s wackiest city layouts. Its colonial-village lanes converge, split, and take hairpin turns, creating a maze of cobblestone that, though frustrating for drivers, makes for a fun walking experience. If you’re visiting for the first time, the best way to navigate the area is to follow the 2.5-mile-long Freedom Trail, which takes you past 16 historical landmarks, including Paul Revere's home, Old North Church (of “One if by land, two if by sea” fame), and Faneuil Hall. You can use Boston public transportation to explore the city if you tire of walking.

Since the area is also the city’s financial district, centuries-old fixtures share sidewalk space with modern 40-story office towers. You’ll find suit-clad professionals grabbing lunch on Washington Street, which is lined with street vendors and flower shops. Downtown is also where you’ll find several of the city’s quirkier neighborhoods, such as the Leather District. With its rustic warehouses, the neighborhood is the closest example of what the business center looked like in the 1800s.

Outstanding staff I was very pleased with my recent stay at the hotel during a work trip. The location is perfect for physicians and the amenities are all you could ask for — but what truly sets this hotel apart is its outstanding staff. A special thanks to Liam Ward, who went above and beyond to help me with a last-minute change to my booking. He handled everything smoothly and professionally — even assisting me well past midnight. It's rare to encounter someone so dedicated, proactive, and genuinely eager to help. Thank you again, Liam. I’ll definitely be returning — largely because of your exceptional service and work ethic. - Jeevika

Neither Style Nor Function I really don't think my husband and I are fussy travelers - we just want a clean, safe spot with staff that is generally attentive and helpful. We're more function over style kind of folks. And this hotel didn't hit "style" OR "function". The hotel presents itself as “industrial chic,” but it seems that's an excuse for just leaving things unfinished and feeling cheap. I've stayed at other Moxy hotels and I understand and enjoy the brand's "fun" aesthetic, but this aesthetic was giving "prison". But again, we don't need the "style" factor so this was less of an issue, more an observation. The lobby is not located on the ground floor, with either no security present, or security that was so glued to their phones they didn't even notice me walking in. Since you can go straight up to your floor from this elevator, someone from the street could follow you to your room, which felt extremely unsafe. There were multiple times where I stopped on the lobby floor and got off because there were people who followed me from the street into the elevator and didn't use their keycard to press a floor. Upon check-in, I was informed of a $35/day destination fee, which is apparently offset by a $35/day bar credit presented as a "gift". Unfortunately, the kitchen and bar closed at inconsistent hours during my stay, and the bar staff was unfriendly and rude, leaving us waiting while they were chatting. Rooms are very small with no traditional storage or furniture. There’s no closet or dresser—just a few wall pegs and hangers. This was fine for us since we were there on vacation, but would have been problematic for business travel. We brought back two breakfast sandwiches to eat in the room one morning, and the tiny folding table hanging from the pegs barely fit our boxes - this is how small and cramped the rooms are. The bathroom was a mixed experience. It was a good size, but the sliding door didn’t stay closed and didn’t seal at all, which...would be problematic if I was traveling with someone I was less comfortable with than my spouse. Parking is $40/day and while I'm fully accustomed to paying $50+/night at hotels, I found this price to be outrageous since parking is at a PUBLIC LOT about a 7 minute walk away, which felt questionable since it wasn't particularly clean or secure. So you get the Downtown experience (loud, dirty, homeless, etc.) the entire way to your car and in the lot for $40/day. The upside is that the location is excellent. We had great weather and were able to walk to a number of great neighborhoods and landmarks, including Back Bay, the Boston Public Library, Boston Common, Newbury Street, the Freedom Trail, the waterfront, and the North End. Being so central was great, but this hotel in particular was not. In the future, we'd likely stay at another hotel in the area.
