Downtown Boston: Revolution-Era Landmarks and Modern Skyscrapers

Downtown Boston is home to one of the country’s wackiest city layouts. Its colonial-village lanes converge, split, and take hairpin turns, creating a maze of cobblestone that, though frustrating for drivers, makes for a fun walking experience. If you’re visiting for the first time, the best way to navigate the area is to follow the 2.5-mile-long Freedom Trail, which takes you past 16 historical landmarks, including Paul Revere's home, Old North Church (of “One if by land, two if by sea” fame), and Faneuil Hall. You can use Boston public transportation to explore the city if you tire of walking.

Since the area is also the city’s financial district, centuries-old fixtures share sidewalk space with modern 40-story office towers. You’ll find suit-clad professionals grabbing lunch on Washington Street, which is lined with street vendors and flower shops. Downtown is also where you’ll find several of the city’s quirkier neighborhoods, such as the Leather District. With its rustic warehouses, the neighborhood is the closest example of what the business center looked like in the 1800s.

Tiny Room, No Storage and a Noisy Stay I’ve just returned from a five-night stay at the Moxy Boston Downtown and unfortunately, it was a disappointing experience overall. The room I stayed in was, without a doubt, the worst-appointed hotel room I have ever encountered. To begin with, it was extremely small. While I expected a compact space given the central location in Boston, the size wasn’t the issue - it was the complete lack of storage that made the stay uncomfortable. There were no shelves, cupboards, wardrobes or drawers - only a dozen wall pegs and three coat hangers. Several of these pegs were already in use, holding the foldable table and chairs, leaving me with no practical way to unpack my suitcase. Fortunately, after speaking with reception, they were able to provide six additional hangers, which made things just about manageable. Another issue was the noise. The hotel is situated on a busy and very noisy junction. So much so, in fact, that the hotel provides earplugs and a white noise machine - a clear indication that noise complaints are common. I also found the bar staff to be rather rude and unwelcoming. The combined bar, reception and restaurant area lacked atmosphere and smelled strongly of burnt pizza cheese, which didn’t help the overall ambience. On a more positive note, the front desk staff were helpful throughout and Max at the bar was a standout. Friendly, professional and engaging - he was a pleasure to interact with and a credit to the hotel. The rest of the bar team would do well to follow his example. Thank you, Moxy Max! In summary, the stay wasn’t dreadful, but for the price I paid, I expected far better facilities and a more thoughtfully appointed room. I wouldn’t return.

Exceptional Service Mario was amazing! We got in early from our flight and needed to get dressed and head right to an event. We were a bit frantic but met with his welcoming demeanor and he was able to find us a room hours in advance. It made for the perfect start to the trip and eased all our worries!
