Sandwiched between the Endless and Pocono Mountains, Clarks Summit is a short drive from hiking and biking trails and scenic vistas. The quiet borough lies just outside of Scranton—the town made famous by the TV show The Office—in northeastern Pennsylvania. Drive 10 minutes north to Lackawanna State Park to hike 18 miles of trails that lead around scenic Lackawanna Lake. Always a great stay While I’m usually fiercely loyal to the Hilton and Hyatt brands, spacious rooms, convenient location and a PHENOMENAL staff makes Nichols Village the only place I’ll stay in the Scranton area. Five stars across the board.

Sorely neglected property A friend and I booked two rooms there for his HS reunion. He requested a handicap room, as he is 82 and has limited mobility. There was only one on the whole property. However, when we checked in, the key card did not work. After the teenager at the front desk reprogrammed it and it STILL did not work, maintenance and housekeeping were called. Twenty minutes later, the lock itself was rekeyed (!) and he could get into his room. When he went to take a shower, he tried to adjust the flow so water would come from the showerhead, not the faucet below. Unfortunately, the showerhead came off the wall in his hands, forcing my elderly friend to take a bath, which was difficult for him to get into and out of. My room unfortunately, could not be located next to his, so I was on the fourth floor. The electrical outlet in my bathroom did not work, so I had to do my hair elsewhere. The alarm clock/radio, despite being plugged in, did not work; good thing I had my cell phone. The wall AC unit dripped so much condensation onto the rug that in the morning it was squishing beneath my toes. The "Continental breakfast" offered from 7-11 am was dismal. There was dry cereal and rolls/bagels pre-wrapped in cellophane, like you'd get at a gas station. A tiny dorm refrigerator held one pitcher of OJ and milk and a few pats of butter. The "spa" portion of the property looks as if it's been boarded up for years. And the sulky teenage clerk working the front desk took 25 minutes to check in 3 guests, loudly announcing their room numbers as he handed them their card keys. The scariest part, though, was that someone tried to enter my room TWICE during the night that we stayed there. Fortunately, I had the latch on. In the morning, I saw that the door to the outside parking lot had been propped up with a large rock, letting in anyone who wanted from the outside! The halls were not air conditioned and humid as all heck, with the wallpaper literally peeling off the walls in spots. I overhead another guest ask about the pool, and was told it was closed for repairs. Another guest asked about the self-serve laundry and was told that was broken so he should go to a nearby laundromat. If there had been ANY other hotel in the area with availability, my friend and I would have gone there, but we had no other choice. I'm told by locals that the Nichols family deeply regrets selling the property, as it used to be a four-star hotel in years past. I will never stay there again.

Fine for price we paid We booked this hotel through a Priceline Express deal. Then we read the reviews! I was scared to even walk in. However our room was fine for the price we paid. It is definitely not a 3 star place. "If" they have a spa, I would not go to it. This hotel sort of makes me sad, you can see it was once really nice. I suggest the owners refresh the lobby and then freshen the hallways. Or turn this into studio apartments. It could be a great place with some effort as it has good bones. We stayed in Room 146. Ask for it, it really was fine for the price.
